{"id":82,"date":"2012-04-14T10:34:51","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T09:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=82"},"modified":"2012-04-14T10:34:51","modified_gmt":"2012-04-14T09:34:51","slug":"baroque-opera-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=82","title":{"rendered":"Baroque Opera Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?attachment_id=84\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/images101-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>Holy Trinity Church Hastings Sun April 1<\/p>\n<p>Baroque music originated, so the reference books say, as after-dinner entertainment in the drawing-rooms of stately home.<\/p>\n<p>So when the recently-formed but thriving <em>Baroque Opera Live<\/em> found their stately home at the church of Holy Trinity with the &#8216;after-dinner&#8217; provided by the delicious refreshments after the performance, they were carrying on the tradition.\u00a0 The difference from the two or three artistes of the original era, the hundred-and-fifty years from 1600 to the demise of Bach and Haydn, was that this Baroque was by a group of brightly-gowned ladies and a significant number of gentlemen.<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble opened with Handel&#8217;s <em>Awake the Trumpets<\/em> followed by <em>O Sacred Head Now Wounded<\/em> conducted by the group&#8217;s Director Duncan Reid with Nigel Howard on the organ.<\/p>\n<p>With Duncan on piano, from Bach&#8217;s <em>St Matthew&#8217;s Passion<\/em> soprano Linda Westcott sang <em>Bleed Dear Heart.<\/em> A seasonal offering came from Linda Grace, one of the group&#8217;s founders, with <em>Tell me quickly, Where is my Saviour<\/em> from Bach&#8217;s 1736 Easter Oratorio.<\/p>\n<p>More familiar was Purcell&#8217;s <em>Fairest Isle<\/em> sung by tenor Douglas Edwards with Jonathan Swift on &#8216;cello and Nigel Howard on harpsichord, followed by Cindy and Hebe Gilham with his lesser-known\u00a0 <em>Sweet Delights of Spring.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ensemble returned with Wiliam Boyce&#8217;s <em>&#8216;Tis Better to Laugh than Cry<\/em>, and baritone John Cobb&#8217;s robust rendering of <em>Plenty, Peace &amp; Pleasure Fly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Aisla Vinson implored us to <em>Weep No More my Heart<\/em>, before Linda Grace&#8217;s <em>Nisi Dominus<\/em> by Vivaldi, a name always associated with Baroque, and more Purcell from Linda Westcott.
