{"id":7195,"date":"2023-08-23T21:06:13","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=7195"},"modified":"2023-08-23T21:06:13","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:06:13","slug":"hastings-all-saints-organ-series-francesca-massey-21st-august-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=7195","title":{"rendered":"HASTINGS ALL SAINTS ORGAN SERIES \u2013 FRANCESCA MASSEY 21st August 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-variant-caps: normal;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1464 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.durham-singers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/F.Massey-001-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/>Making a return visit after her well-received previous concert Francesca Massey brought an interesting programme and fine performances throughout the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Three pieces by Joseph Jongen \u2013 <em>Cantabile<\/em>, <em>Pensee d\u2019Automne<\/em> and <em>Scherzetto<\/em> \u2013 featured some sparkling registrations which are characteristic of this particular composer\u2019s style. Sweelinck\u2019s <em>Fantasia Chromatica<\/em> gave a good example of the complexities of early (16th C) repertoire. Rheinberger\u2019s <em>Sonata No 16<\/em> and Brahms <em>Fugue in A flat<\/em> brought some solid 19th Century German Romantic fare.<\/p>\n<p>The evening began with two brilliant 20th Century pieces based on well known hymn tunes \u2013 Egil Hovland\u2019s <em>Toccata on Nu la oss take Gud (Now thank we all or God)<\/em> and John Joubert\u2019s <em>Chorale Prelude on the \u2018Old Hundredth<\/em>\u2019. A further 20th Century work \u2013 Whitlock\u2019s <em>Plymouth Suite<\/em> brought the programme to a stylish end with its contrasting movements ending in the partially understated Toccata.<\/p>\n<p>A lovely fun encore in the shape of an excerpt from Ian Farrington\u2019s <em>Animal Parade<\/em> brought the evening to a close.<\/p>\n<p>Next week \u2013 the final concert in the 2023 series \u2013 Gordon Stewart, concert organist.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Page<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Making a return visit after her well-received previous concert Francesca Massey brought an interesting programme and fine performances throughout the evening.
