She was joined by her regular partners Martin Sj\u00f6stedt, <em>piano<\/em><em>,<\/em> Niklas Fernqvist, <em>double bass<\/em><em>,<\/em> and Daniel Fredriksson<em>, percussion <\/em>and special guests Alex Garnett and Liane Carroll.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/C-Martin.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/C-Martin.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the piano was not quite at the heart of the evening then it certainly played a respectable part with some fine breaks from Martin Sj\u00f6stedt in the first half and the more familiar presence of Liane Carroll in the second.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Martin has an eclectic style, drawing on numbers by Tony Bennett, Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald as well as more recent songs. She also ranges vocally from clearly articulated items like the laid-back approach to <em>A rainy night in Tokyo <\/em>or the scat vocals of <em>Believe in it. <\/em>It was a pity that she seemed to assume her audience would be familiar with much of her music as her introductions did not carry well within the acoustic at St Mary\u2019s so we missed much of what passed between the items.<\/p>\n<p>Saxophonist Alex Garnett is a recent visitor to Hastings, bringing an evening of Ronnie Scott\u2019s Jazz to the White Rock, but here he played duets with Claire as well as adding a number of scintillating breaks alongside the trio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2200\" height=\"1069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20.jpg 2200w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20-1024x498.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/L-Carroll-3-20-500x243.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2200px) 100vw, 2200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the second half Claire was joined by Lianne Carroll who is well known to us for her many years of enthusiastic music-making in Hastings.
