{"id":5843,"date":"2020-02-09T10:37:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T10:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=5843"},"modified":"2020-02-09T10:40:54","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T10:40:54","slug":"london-mozart-players-celebrating-strings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=5843","title":{"rendered":"London Mozart Players: Celebrating Strings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>St Mary in the Castle, Friday 7 February 2020<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>London Mozart Players certainly fulfilled their intention of working closely with young musicians last Friday when they drew on players of all levels \u2013 quite literally so, from tiny performers playing on single open strings, to teens who are looking towards a professional career \u2013 in the premiere of Jeff Moore\u2019s <em>Fiddler\u2019s Hill. <\/em>\u00a0This is a deceptively immediate work but digging only slightly below the surface reveals a piece which allows all potential performers, at whatever level, to feel fully involved and important to the final outcome. What better way to encourage young musicians than to make them feel that they matter and are as essential to the impact of the work as the long standing members of LMP?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/LMP-pic.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/LMP-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The evening was carefully structured to cover a wide range of styles and techniques, enabling the audience to experience the demands on a professional player as well as the wide range of skills they need. The second movement of Britten\u2019s <em>Simple Symphony <\/em>\u2013 <em>Playful Pizzicato- <\/em>is certainly familiar but also brings us the range of tone available to the composer just using plucked strings.<\/p>\n<p>In the second half the orchestra played Holst\u2019s <em>St Paul\u2019s Suite, <\/em>itself written for young musicians and a fascinating segue, via Bach\u2019s popular <em>Air on a G string<\/em> into <em>Fiddler\u2019s Hill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>LMP work without a conductor \u2013 except for the premiere which was conducted by the composer \u2013 but are led with tact and considerable skill by first violin Ruth Rogers, who also introduced the works as the evening progressed.<\/p>\n<p>If I have left the finest moment of the evening till last it was because it was the most unexpected. The arrangement for string orchestra of Piazzolla\u2019s <em>Oblivion<\/em> and the popular <em>Libertango <\/em>was superb, and raised what had been a pleasant evening\u2019s music making to another level all together.
