If the programme seemed comfortably familiar there was nothing wrong in that, as Stephen Bell makes the overtures to <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em> and <em>Countess Mariza<\/em> sparkle like new and allows us to wallow sentimentally in Lehar\u2019s <em>Gold and Silver Waltz.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/S-Bell.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/S-Bell.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second half brought a little contrast with Sullivan\u2019s <em>Overture di Ballo<\/em> and the delightful novelty of Ronald Binge\u2019s <em>Faire Frou-Frou\u00b8<\/em> before we were back on more familiar ground with <em>Unter Donner und Blitz <\/em>and \u2013 inevitably \u2013 <em>The Blue Danube.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ailish Tynan impressed particularly with the sensitivity of her approach, spinning gloriously delicate tone in <em>Im Chambre Separee <\/em>to complement the full flooded romanticism of Adele\u2019s <em>Laughing Song, <\/em>and <em>Meine Lippen. <\/em>To sit comfortably alongside the Sullivan we heard a deliciously cool rendition of <em>The sun whose rays <\/em>from <em>The Mikado. <\/em>Stephen Bell guided us through the music with aplomb, adding his own anecdotes and just the occasional groan-worthy cracker joke.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/A-Tynan.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/A-Tynan.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Encores are inevitable and well deserved \u2013 this year Ailish Tynan wooed us with <em>Vilja <\/em>before we clapped along happily to the <em>Radetzky March. <\/em>Roll on next year and a happy 2020 to all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Dome, Brighton, New Year\u2019s Eve, 31 December 2019 The Viennese Matinee for New Year is always a favourite and with Stephen Bell at the helm and Ailish Tynan in mellifluous voice it could not fail.
