He opened with Arthur Wills\u2019 <em>Procession<\/em> with all its flare and excitement but moved smoothly on to John Ireland\u2019s beautiful miniature <em>Minuet<\/em> from the Downland Suite. It is always good to hear pieces from the Robertsbridge Codex, and the <em>Estampie<\/em> manages to delight and challenge in equal measure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2114\" height=\"1692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page.jpg 2114w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page-768x615.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page-1024x820.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/S-Page-375x300.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2114px) 100vw, 2114px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pairing Saint-Saens\u2019 <em>Danse Macabre <\/em>with Sweelinck\u2019s <em>Mein junges Leben hat ein End<\/em> was unusual and effective before the more obvious linkage of three works for Musical Clock, which allowed us to hear some of the clear upper voices of the instrument.<\/p>\n<p>Two more liturgical pieces followed, Bach\u2019s <em>Jesus, meine Zuversicht<\/em> and Tom McLelland-Young\u2019s reflective <em>O Lux beata Trinitas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As is his regular custom, Stephen concluded with two popular pieces, Frederick Curzon\u2019s <em>The Boulevardier<\/em> and Coates\u2019 <em>Knightsbridge March. <\/em>The encore was, inevitably, <em>Blaze Away!!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Page at St John the Evangelist, Hollington Saturday 19 October 2019 Stephen Page mixed a range of very familiar pieces with a few unexpected items in his Hastings Week concert.
