The atmosphere was friendly, relaxed, light, and humorous.\u00a0 \u00a0I use the word \u2018homely\u2019 in that it brought to mind that this was how entertainment must have been before radio and record players; friends and relatives gathered together in appreciation of good music and talent found within themselves.\u00a0 It certainly does not mean that the musical presentation was second rate. \u00a0Ron and Gillian played the best one can hear and from such a wide and challenging range. \u00a0Also, the little ornate, yet intimate, church gave not only the right setting for such music, it also gave the right acoustics for the gentle, beautiful sound of flute and piano.<\/p>\n<p>We had such a wide variety. The 14 items of the duo\u2019s repertoire were a selection from the works of Gershwin, Elgar, Rachmaninov, Grieg, Sartie, Dvorak, Sondheim, Reade, Joplin, Lloyd Webber and Lennon &amp; McCartney.\u00a0 From these composers we heard popular pieces of fairly recent times, <em>\u2018Yesterday\u2019<\/em>, \u2018<em>The Entertainer\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Memory\u2019<\/em>\u00a0 to the classical \u2018<em>Solveig\u2019s Song\u2019,\u00a0 \u20182<sup>nd<\/sup> Movement of New World Symphony\u2019<\/em> and \u2018<em>Vocalise Op 34 No 14\u2019<\/em>. \u00a0This last piece was beautifully and hauntingly presented (my favourite of the evening!). \u00a0The small audience was richly rewarded and obviously appreciative of the choice of music.<\/p>\n<p>Gillian\u2019s playing was enchanting and her flute seemed at times to be an extension of her very self. \u00a0Ron impressed us all with his playing of \u2018<em>Gymnopedie<\/em>\u2019 and <em>\u2018Gnossienne\u2019, <\/em>which he clearly likes.<\/p>\n<p>It was a lovely evening of familiar and popular music.\u00a0 Thank you both for your hard work. \u00a0May we hear more.<\/p>\n<p>Reverend Bernard Crosby.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gillian Padgham (Flute) and accompanied by Ron Baker (piano). \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wednesday \u00a04th September; Church in the Wood.
