{"id":5355,"date":"2019-07-30T09:50:44","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T08:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=5355"},"modified":"2019-07-30T09:51:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T08:51:42","slug":"parkinsongsters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=5355","title":{"rendered":"Parkinsongsters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>St John the Evangelist, Hollington, 29 July 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A welcome return for the Parkinsongsters to St John\u2019s for another afternoon of popular songs and music-making.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/parkin.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/parkin.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Introducing the event, Jane Metcalfe said we were in for an afternoon of English songs but immediately launched into <em>When Johnny comes marching home!<\/em> This slightly tongue-in-cheek approach set the tone for a highly enjoyable session which had opened with <em>The Sun has got his hat on<\/em> and concluded with <em>Bring me sunshine. <\/em>In between we had folk songs \u2013 <em>Oh no John<\/em> and <em>Linden Lea \u2013 <\/em>alongside extended excerpts from <em>The Pirates of Penzance <\/em>and a wistful rendition of <em>Steal Away. <\/em>We were back in America towards the end of the programme with a selection of mid-twentieth century hits following an up-beat version of Bernstein\u2019s <em>America. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>To give the singers a slight respite we heard two solo operatic arias \u2013 Vivaldi\u2019s <em>Vieni, vieni o mio diletto<\/em> and Mozart\u2019s popular <em>Voi che sapete &#8211; <\/em>before the choir gave us <em>La chi darem la mano<\/em> from <em>Don Giovanni.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A large audience on a warm afternoon were understandably enthusiastic, which was certainly deserved, for all involved, not least Jane Metcalfe galvanising her forces but also Duncan Reid at the piano.
