This season sees five ensembles make their Cadogan Hall debuts, performances from international artists and contemporary music from female composers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of its inaugural tour, the newly formed <strong>Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra<\/strong>, conducted by founding Artistic Director <strong>Jan Latham-Koenig<\/strong>, open the series. The ensemble, on a 7-date tour of the UK, is made up of young musicians from conservatoires from both countries: they perform music of their homelands, inspired by the great Cold War friendship between the two composers after whom the orchestra is named.<\/p>\n<p>The orchestra\u2019s only London date opens with Vaughan Williams\u2019 <em>Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis <\/em>and closes with Shostakovich\u2019s <em>Hamlet Op.116a <\/em>with actors <strong>Edward Fox <\/strong>and <strong>Freddie Fox<\/strong>. <strong>Pavel Kolesnikov<\/strong> is the soloist for Rachmaninov\u2019s <em>Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini<\/em> before the focus returns to the UK with Britten\u2019s <em>Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes <\/em>(Wednesday 25 September 2019).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Mariinsky Orchestra <\/strong>and <strong>Valery Gergiev <\/strong>return to Cadogan Hall for a pair of concerts. They mark the 150th anniversary of Berlioz\u2019s death with his <em>Symphonie Fantastique <\/em>and excerpts from <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. Both dates feature a different soloist winner from the prestigious XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition: Gold Medal winner for Woodwind <strong>Matvey Demin<\/strong> performs Ibert\u2019s <em>Flute Concerto <\/em>and <em>Fantasy on Bizet\u2019s Carmen <\/em>by Borne. Silver Medal winner for Piano <strong>Mao Fujita<\/strong> plays Tchaikovsky\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 1. Excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s <em>Mlada <\/em>as well as <em>The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya <\/em>complete each programme (Monday 7 &amp; Tuesday 8 October 2019).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>All-Russian Programmes<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexandra Dariescu<\/strong> joins the <strong>Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong> for Rachmaninov\u2019s much-loved Piano Concerto No. 2. Conducted by <strong>Yuri Simonov<\/strong>, ballet music permeates the rest of the programme with Tchaikovsky\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> <em>Fantasy Overture, <\/em>as well as excerpts from <em>Swan Lake <\/em>and Khachaturian\u2019s <em>Gayane<\/em> (Thursday 10 October 2019).<\/p>\n<p>In its series debut, the <strong>Siberian Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> conducted by <strong>Dmitry Vasiliev<\/strong>, open their concert with Shostakovich\u2019s <em>Festive Overture<\/em>. <strong>Freddy Kempf <\/strong>makes a welcome return to Cadogan Hall to perform Rachmaninov\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 3 before Tchaikovsky\u2019s Symphony No. 4 closes the programme (Thursday 23 April 2020).<\/p>\n<p>In a celebration of Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, the <strong>St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra <\/strong>is joined by <strong>Jennifer Pike <\/strong>for Tchaikovsky\u2019s Violin Concerto. Tchaikovsky\u2019s Symphony No. 5 and excerpts from Prokofiev\u2019s <em>Cinderella Suite <\/em>bookend the concert, which is conducted by <strong>Nikolai Alexeev<\/strong> (Wednesday 27 May 2020).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Contemporary Music<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Iceland Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> with conductor <strong>Yan Pascal Tortelier <\/strong>perform <em>Aereality, <\/em>the work written for them by fellow Icelander <strong>Anna Thorvaldsd\u00f3ttir<\/strong>. Premiered in November 2011, it was nominated as Composition of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2012 and portrays the state of gliding with nothing to hold onto, as if flying. The music explores both the feeling of absolute freedom and unease gained from the lack of attachment. Also making up their debut programme at Cadogan Hall is Bizet\u2019s <em>L\u2019Arl\u00e9sienne Suite No. 2, <\/em>Ravel\u2019s jazzy <em>Piano Concerto for the Left Hand <\/em>with <strong>Yeol Eum Son<\/strong>, as well as excerpts from Prokofiev\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> (Monday 10 February 2020).<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Brussels Philharmonic <\/strong>and conductor <strong>St<\/strong><strong>\u00e9phane Den<\/strong><strong>\u00e8ve <\/strong>return to close the series. <strong>Anna Clyne<\/strong>\u2019s <em>This Midnight Hour<\/em>, which premiered in November 2015, opens the concert and is inspired by poetry as well as the character and power of the lower strings of <em>L\u2019Orchestre national d\u2019<\/em><em>\u00cele-de-France<\/em>. Following this, <strong>Jean-Yves Thibaudet <\/strong>is the soloist in Liszt\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 2 before the final work: Mahler\u2019s epic Symphony No. 1 (Thursday 11 June 2020).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Other International Artists<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guitarist <strong>Milo<\/strong><strong>\u0161 Karadaglic<\/strong> brings Spanish repertoire to Cadogan Hall with <strong>Flanders Symphony Orchestra <\/strong>under <strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Gomez<\/strong>. The programme opens with Rossini\u2019s <em>The Barber of Seville Overture <\/em>and continues with music by Rodrigo, Villa-Lobos, de Falla and closes with Bizet\u2019s <em>Carmen Suite<\/em> (Wednesday 30 October 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Mezzo-soprano <strong>Ester Pavlu <\/strong>is the soloist with <strong>Prague Symphony Orchestra <\/strong>in Mahler\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 3<\/em>, often referred to has his hymn to the natural world. <strong>Pietari Inkinen <\/strong>conducts. (Tuesday 12 November 2019).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Lu <\/strong>performs Beethoven\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 4, the work with which he won the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition and has subsequently released on Warner Classics to great acclaim. <strong>Orchestre National de Lille <\/strong>make its Cadogan Hall debut under the baton of <strong>Alexandre Bloch <\/strong>and completes the all-French programme with Ravel\u2019s <em>Ma m\u00e8re l\u2019Oye Suite <\/em>and <em>La Valse <\/em>as well as Debussy\u2019s <em>La Mer<\/em> (Wednesday 29 January 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Both performing for the first time at Cadogan Hall, the <strong>Swedish Philharmonia <\/strong>are joined by violinist <strong>Viktoria Mullova <\/strong>for Prokofiev\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 2, conducted by <strong>Jaime Mart\u00edn<\/strong>.
