The larger works include Stanford\u2019s <em>Evening Service in A <\/em>and Bairstow\u2019s <em>Blessed City, Heavenly Salem <\/em>and <em>The Lamentations. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">LE POISSON MAGIQUE \u2013 ORGAN WORKS BY JOHN McCABE<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">TOM WINPENNY, organ of St Albans Cathedral<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">RESONUS\u00a0 RES10144\u00a0 71\u201943<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Presented almost chronologically this programme is a wonderful compilation of John McCabe\u2019s output for organ, much dating from the 1960s but also with works written much later. Alongside the 6 movement <em>Sinfonia,<\/em> the <em>Johannis-Partita <\/em>and the work which gives this CD its name (inspired by Paul Klee\u2019s painting) is the set of 7 <em>Carol-Preludes<\/em> (2008) and <em>Esperanza<\/em>, written in 2010 for the St Albans Organ Festival. Tom Winpenny is very much at home here, giving fine performances throughout. Features a number of world premiere recordings.<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">FRANCOIS COUPERIN \u2013 QUATRIEME LIVRE DE PIECES DE CLAVECIN<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">GUILLERMO BRACHETTA, harpsichord<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">RESONUS RES10240 (2CD) 79\u201956 &amp; 76\u201946<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This release is the first in a major series which will cover the complete <em>Pieces de Clavecin <\/em>by Couperin. These recordings bring these characterful pieces to life once more. This is a good entry point for anyone unfamiliar with the baroque keyboard repertoire, who may find the variety and inventiveness here a surprise. Equally for those wishing to build a complete collection this series promises to be a valuable one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH \u2013 DAS WOHLTEMPERIERTE KLAVIER VOL 1 (BWV 846-869<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>STEVEN DEVINE, harpsichord<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>RESONUS RES10239 (2CD) 55\u201906 &amp; 56\u201913<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This is very familiar territory but a new recording from Steven Devine is always welcome and it is good to hear his scholarly yet musical interpretations of this staple of the keyboard repertoire. He plays a recent instrument by Colin Booth, modelled on an 18<sup>th<\/sup> century instrument by Johann Christof Fleischer. Covering Book 1 of the Preludes and Fugues, this is the first of a 2 volume set.<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">PIANO SONATAS BY HAYDN, MOZART &amp; BEETHOVEN<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">WALEWEIN WITTEN, fortepiano<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">RESONUS RES10242\u00a0 71\u201929<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This collection presents focussed performances of later classical keyboard works on a copy of an 1805 Walter fortepiano. I have to confess to not being a fan of the sound of the fortepiano but these are fresh recordings with Walewein Witten giving an authentic voice to this repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">MARK-ANTHONY TURNAGE \u2013 A CONSTANT OBSESSION<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">NICKY SPENCE, tenor<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">CHAMBER DOMAINE<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">THOMAS KEMP, conductor<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">RESONUS RES10106\u00a0 59\u201927<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Alongside the many varied releases of earlier music it is good to see Resonus championing the work of contemporary Bristish composers. Mark-Anthony Turnage\u2019s chamber music is the subject of this disk. The title comes from a 6 movement work for tenor and 8 players featuring settings of texts by Hardy, Keats and others. Also featured are <em>Three for Two <\/em>(piano quartet), <em>Four Chants <\/em>(violin and piano), <em>A Slow Pavane<\/em> (piano trio) and <em>Grazioso! <\/em>(for 6 players). All the music has been written between 2004 and 2010.<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">BEETHOVEN PIANO SONATAS Op 2 No 1, Op 14 No 2, Op 53 \u2018Waldstein\u2019, Op 54<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">ANGELA HEWITT, piano<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">HYPERION CDA68220 76\u201946<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This release marks the penultimate point in Angela Hewitt\u2019s complete cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas. It combines the familiar and the less so. As always Angela Hewitt seems completely at ease in these performances and they are beautifully presented here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SAINT-SAENS PIANO CONCERTOS 3, 4 &amp; 5 \u2018L\u2019EGYPTIEN\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>ALEXANDRE KANTOROW, piano<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>TAPIOLA SINFONIETTA<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>JEAN-JACQUES KANTOROW, conductor<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BIS BIS-2300\u00a0\u00a0 80\u201937<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This sequence of \u00a0three <em>piano concertos<\/em> span nearly 30 years of Saint-Saens\u2019 life. They follow on from perhaps the most well-known concerto (No 2) and make for interesting comparison with that and with the so-called <em>\u201cOrgan\u201d Symphony. <\/em>Christened the \u201cyoung Tsar\u2019 of the piano\u201d\u2019 and \u201cLiszt reincarnated\u201d Alexandre Kantorow\u2019s coupling with the prolific Tapiola Sinfonietta is very successful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>HIERONYMUS PRAETORIUS \u2013 MOTETS IN 8,10,12,16 &amp; 20 PARTS<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>ALAMIRE<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>HIS MAJESTY\u2019S SAGBUTTS &amp; CORNETTS<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>STEPHEN FARR, organ<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>DAVID SKINNER, director<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>INVENTA INV001 (2 CD) 57\u201946 &amp; 42\u201939<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>These large scale choral works in these brilliant recordings transport the listener back to a different age and into another dimension. There is much variety here as different forces and compositional styles feature throughout. A very enjoyable collection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>JACQUES OFFENBACH \u2013 COMPLETE PIANO WORKS<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>MARCO SOLLINI, piano<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>CPO\u00a0 555287-2 (3CD) 211\u201933<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Offenbach\u2019s piano music is not well known. Here is a complete collection of both original music and arrangements. Much of this music is in dance form and most pieces are short with a few slightly extended pieces. The first CD includes two collections \u2013<em>Decameron dramatique <\/em>and <em>Les Roses du Bengal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">IL CEMBALO TRANSALPINO from the FITZWILLIAM COLLECTION<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">SOPHIE YATES, harpsichord<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">CHANDOS CHACONNE\u00a0 CHAN 0819\u00a0 65\u201916<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>A lovely collection of mostly shorter pieces from the Fitzwilliam Collection. Many of the composers names may be unfamiliar to the listener \u2013 the exceptions being Girolamo Frescobaldi, Domenico Zipoli, Peter Philips &amp; Arcangelo Corelli. The latter two have the longest compositions here \u2013 <em>Passamezzo Pavan &amp; Galliard <\/em>(Philips) and <em>Sonata Op 5 No 7<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">THOMAS ARNE \u2013 THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">THE BROOK STREET BAND &amp; SOLOISTS<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">JOHN ANDREWS, conductor<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">DUTTON EPOCH\u00a0 CDLX7361 67\u201950<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>This masque, with libretto by William Congreve, was first performed in 1742. Partially reconstructed due to the full score being lost, this is a world premiere recording.
