After a <em>Jubilant<\/em> opening which set the tone of clarity and engagement they reflected the churches proximity to the sea with the gently lilting <em>The Roll of the Sea<\/em> and an upbeat arrangement of <em>La Mer. <\/em>This was sung in French and the ensemble showed their linguistic skills soon after with the Mexican favourite <em>Cielito Lindo. <\/em>In between we were on safe ground with a heart-warming arrangement of <em>Flying Free<\/em> and a near barber-shop rendition of <em>Misty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/polyphony.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/polyphony.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first half ended with a move away from the secular to reflect the church setting with John Rutter\u2019s lovely <em>A Clare Blessing<\/em> and Libby Cozens solo singing of <em>You\u2019ll never walk alone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second half opened in similar vein with Barbara Burgess singing <em>Wishing<\/em> from <em>Phantom of the Opera,<\/em> before we were swept away by grandmothers, in the quirky <em>A Bonnie Wee Lassie<\/em> and <em>Grandmother\u2019s Feather Bed. <\/em>A complete change of mood took us through two spirituals \u2013 <em>Deep River<\/em> and <em>Walk Dem Bones \u2013 <\/em>to a section of Baroque music. The <em>Lacrymosa<\/em> from Mozart\u2019s Requiem was given in a highly convincing arrangement for the five female voices followed by Handel\u2019s <em>lascia ch&#8217;io pianga<\/em> from <em>Rinaldo<\/em> and Gluck\u2019s \u00a0<em>Torna O Bella<\/em> from <em>Orpheo. <\/em>We returned to the present for the sentimental but none the less effective <em>In Our Children\u2019s Eyes <\/em>to conclude the evening, but the ensemble were persuaded to add a tonic sol-fa <em>Gallop <\/em>to bring a smile to all faces as we left.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout, the five female voices, under their conductor Sue Barrett, had maintained a constant flow of texture and tone, combining <em>a cappella<\/em> sections with more spirited accompaniment from Jenny Beckwith, but maintaining at all times a level of engagement and musicality which left us wanting more.<\/p>\n<p>Their next scheduled performance is not until December but you can keep in touch through their website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sovereignpolyphony.com\">www.sovereignpolyphony.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St Nicolas, Pevensey Saturday 25 May 2019 Polyphony made a welcome return to St Nicolas, with a joyous mix of music for a summer evening.
