{"id":4888,"date":"2019-01-21T14:53:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T14:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2019-01-21T14:53:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T14:53:38","slug":"garsington-opera-2019-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4888","title":{"rendered":"Garsington Opera 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>30<sup>th<\/sup> ANNIVERSARY SEASON: FOUR NEW PRODUCTIONS <\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>INCLUDING AN OFFENBACH PREMIERE<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Garsington Opera\u2019s 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary season will feature four new productions \u2013 the UK stage premiere of Offenbach\u2019s <em>Fantasio<\/em>, Smetana\u2019s <em>The Bartered Bride<\/em>, Mozart\u2019s <em>Don Giovanni<\/em> and finally Britten\u2019s <em>The Turn of the Screw<\/em>.\u00a0 The season culminates with concert performances of Monteverdi\u2019s <em>Vespers of 1610<\/em>, celebrating the start of a partnership with The English Concert.\u00a0 The season runs from 29 May to 26 July.<\/p>\n<p>Garsington Opera remains committed to engaging great singers from around the world as well as showcasing the best talent from the UK.\u00a0 They are joined by the <strong>Garsington Opera Chorus and Orchestra,<\/strong> and for the performances of <em>The Bartered Bride<\/em>, the <strong>Philharmonia Orchestra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK stage premiere of Offenbach\u2019s little-known opera <strong><em>Fantasio<\/em><\/strong> celebrates his bicentenary year.\u00a0 A beguiling tale of love and mistaken identity, it will feature <strong>Hanna Hipp, <\/strong>who sang Clairon in <em>Capriccio<\/em> last season, in the role of the Jester, a melancholy, moon-struck dreamer yearning after Princess Elsbeth, performed by <strong>Jennifer France, <\/strong>winner of the Critics Circle Emerging Talent Award 2018, the Leonard Ingrams Foundation Award 2014 and praised for her appearance as Susanna in John Cox\u2019s legendary <em>Le nozze di Figaro<\/em>.\u00a0 They are joined by <strong>Huw Montague Rendall<\/strong> (Prince of Mantua), <strong>Timothy Robinson<\/strong> (Marinoni), <strong>Brian Bannatyne-Scott<\/strong> (King of Bavaria) and <strong>Bianca Andrew<\/strong> (Flamel).\u00a0 Three singers, formerly on the Alvarez Young Artists\u2019 Programme, <strong>Benjamin Lewis<\/strong> (Sparck), <strong>Joseph Padfield<\/strong> (Hartmann) and <strong>Joel Williams<\/strong> (Facio) complete the cast.\u00a0 This fantastical story is performed in a lively new English translation by <strong>Jeremy Sams<\/strong>.\u00a0 The creative team of director <strong>Martin Duncan<\/strong> and designer <strong>Francis O\u2019Connor<\/strong> return after many admired productions at Garsington Opera, and are joined by lighting designer <strong>Howard Hudson<\/strong> and choreographer <strong>Ewan Jones<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Making his Garsington Opera debut, <strong>Justin Doyle<\/strong>, Artistic Director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rias-kammerchor.de\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.rias-kammerchor.de\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1548166262348000&amp;usg=AFQjCNETGzhwrnaHLwz5p7hA1qPvDMGViQ\">RIAS Kammerchor<\/a>, Berlin, will conduct.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Bartered Bride<\/em><\/strong>, a celebration of Czech culture and identity, will be reimagined into the heart of the English countryside, and will open the season.\u00a0 <strong>Natalya Romaniw<\/strong>, last seen at Garsington as Tatyana in <em>Eugene Onegin<\/em>,\u00a0 sings the heroine <em>Ma<\/em><em>?<\/em><em>enka<\/em> who uses all her charm and cunning to marry the man she loves \u2013 Jen\u00edk, sung by American tenor <strong>Brenden Gunnell<\/strong>.\u00a0 The cast includes <strong>Joshua Bloom <\/strong>(Kecal) last seen as Figaro (2017), <strong>Stuart Jackson<\/strong> (<em>Va\u0161ek<\/em>), <strong>Peter Savidge<\/strong> (Kru\u0161ina), <strong>Heather Shipp<\/strong> (Ludmila), <strong>Brian Bannatyne-Scott<\/strong> (M\u00edcha), <strong>Anne-Marie Owens<\/strong> (H\u00e1ta), and <strong>Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts<\/strong> (Circus Master).\u00a0 <strong>Lara Marie M\u00fcller<\/strong>, a former Alvarez Young Artist, sings Esmeralda. Dance is at the heart of this sparkling work from the vibrant overture to the riotous and festive polka;\u00a0 <strong>Jac van Steen<\/strong>, who returns after his success with <em>Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em> (2017), will conduct the <strong>Philharmonia Orchestra<\/strong>.\u00a0 The creative team of <strong>Paul Curran<\/strong> (director) and <strong>Kevin Knigh<\/strong>t (designer), whose production of <em>Death in Venice<\/em> (2015) was much acclaimed, returns with <strong>Howard Hudson<\/strong> (lighting designer) and <strong>Darren Royston<\/strong> (movement director).<\/p>\n<p>Mozart&#8217;s enduring masterpiece\u00a0<strong><em>Don Giovanni<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will feature several role debuts including <strong>Jonathan McGovern<\/strong> in the title role, <strong>David Ireland<\/strong> (Leporello), formerly an Alvarez Young Artist, Australian soprano <strong>Sky Ingram<\/strong> (Donna Elvira) and Welsh tenor <strong>Trystan Ll<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><strong>r Griffiths <\/strong>(Don Ottavio).\u00a0 The cast also includes two UK debuts \u2013 Brazilian soprano <strong>Camila Titinger<\/strong> (Donna Anna) and Canadian soprano <strong>Mireille Asselin<\/strong> (Zerlina).\u00a0 <strong>Paul Whelan<\/strong> (Commendatore) and former Alvarez Young Artist <strong>Thomas Faulkner<\/strong> (Masetto) complete the cast.\u00a0 Garsington Opera\u2019s Artistic Director <strong>Douglas Boyd<\/strong> conducts and former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company <strong>Michael Boyd<\/strong> (director) returns to direct together with <strong>Tom Piper<\/strong> (designer), after their success with <em>Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em> (2017) and <em>Eugene Onegin<\/em> (2016) with <strong>Malcolm Rippeth <\/strong>(lighting designer).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Turn of the Screw<\/em><\/strong> with a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, based on the novella by Henry James, is considered to be one of Britten\u2019s finest stage works.\u00a0 The gripping story of a young governess, performed by <strong>Sophie Bevan<\/strong>, sent to a remote country house to care for two children, also features the tenor <strong>Ed Lyon<\/strong> (Prologue\/Quint), making his role debut.\u00a0 Also in the cast are <strong>Kathleen Wilkinson<\/strong> (Mrs Grose) and <strong>Katherine Broderick<\/strong> (Miss Jessel).\u00a0 Emerging American director <strong>Louisa Muller<\/strong> makes her UK debut together with two-time Olivier and Tony Award-winner <strong>Christopher Oram<\/strong> (designer) and <strong>Malcolm Rippeth<\/strong> (lighting designer).<strong>\u00a0 Richard Farnes<\/strong>, conductor of last year\u2019s admired <em>Falstaff,<\/em> will conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the start of a new partnership, the renowned Baroque and Classical chamber orchestra <strong>The English Concert<\/strong> makes its Garsington debut playing on period instruments in three concert performances of Monteverdi\u2019s <strong><em>Vespers of 1610<\/em><\/strong>.
