30th<\/sup> ANNIVERSARY SEASON: FOUR NEW PRODUCTIONS <\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n
INCLUDING AN OFFENBACH PREMIERE<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n

Garsington Opera\u2019s 30th<\/sup> anniversary season will feature four new productions \u2013 the UK stage premiere of Offenbach\u2019s Fantasio<\/em>, Smetana\u2019s The Bartered Bride<\/em>, Mozart\u2019s Don Giovanni<\/em> and finally Britten\u2019s The Turn of the Screw<\/em>.\u00a0 The season culminates with concert performances of Monteverdi\u2019s Vespers of 1610<\/em>, celebrating the start of a partnership with The English Concert.\u00a0 The season runs from 29 May to 26 July.<\/p>\n

Garsington Opera remains committed to engaging great singers from around the world as well as showcasing the best talent from the UK.\u00a0 They are joined by the Garsington Opera Chorus and Orchestra,<\/strong> and for the performances of The Bartered Bride<\/em>, the Philharmonia Orchestra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The UK stage premiere of Offenbach\u2019s little-known opera Fantasio<\/em><\/strong> celebrates his bicentenary year.\u00a0 A beguiling tale of love and mistaken identity, it will feature Hanna Hipp, <\/strong>who sang Clairon in Capriccio<\/em> last season, in the role of the Jester, a melancholy, moon-struck dreamer yearning after Princess Elsbeth, performed by Jennifer France, <\/strong>winner of the Critics Circle Emerging Talent Award 2018, the Leonard Ingrams Foundation Award 2014 and praised for her appearance as Susanna in John Cox\u2019s legendary Le nozze di Figaro<\/em>.\u00a0 They are joined by Huw Montague Rendall<\/strong> (Prince of Mantua), Timothy Robinson<\/strong> (Marinoni), Brian Bannatyne-Scott<\/strong> (King of Bavaria) and Bianca Andrew<\/strong> (Flamel).\u00a0 Three singers, formerly on the Alvarez Young Artists\u2019 Programme, Benjamin Lewis<\/strong> (Sparck), Joseph Padfield<\/strong> (Hartmann) and Joel Williams<\/strong> (Facio) complete the cast.\u00a0 This fantastical story is performed in a lively new English translation by Jeremy Sams<\/strong>.\u00a0 The creative team of director Martin Duncan<\/strong> and designer Francis O\u2019Connor<\/strong> return after many admired productions at Garsington Opera, and are joined by lighting designer Howard Hudson<\/strong> and choreographer Ewan Jones<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Making his Garsington Opera debut, Justin Doyle<\/strong>, Artistic Director of\u00a0RIAS Kammerchor<\/a>, Berlin, will conduct.<\/p>\n

The Bartered Bride<\/em><\/strong>, a celebration of Czech culture and identity, will be reimagined into the heart of the English countryside, and will open the season.\u00a0 Natalya Romaniw<\/strong>, last seen at Garsington as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin<\/em>,\u00a0 sings the heroine Ma<\/em>?<\/em>enka<\/em> who uses all her charm and cunning to marry the man she loves \u2013 Jen\u00edk, sung by American tenor Brenden Gunnell<\/strong>.\u00a0 The cast includes Joshua Bloom <\/strong>(Kecal) last seen as Figaro (2017), Stuart Jackson<\/strong> (Va\u0161ek<\/em>), Peter Savidge<\/strong> (Kru\u0161ina), Heather Shipp<\/strong> (Ludmila), Brian Bannatyne-Scott<\/strong> (M\u00edcha), Anne-Marie Owens<\/strong> (H\u00e1ta), and Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts<\/strong> (Circus Master).\u00a0 Lara Marie M\u00fcller<\/strong>, a former Alvarez Young Artist, sings Esmeralda. Dance is at the heart of this sparkling work from the vibrant overture to the riotous and festive polka;\u00a0 Jac van Steen<\/strong>, who returns after his success with Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em> (2017), will conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra<\/strong>.\u00a0 The creative team of Paul Curran<\/strong> (director) and Kevin Knigh<\/strong>t (designer), whose production of Death in Venice<\/em> (2015) was much acclaimed, returns with Howard Hudson<\/strong> (lighting designer) and Darren Royston<\/strong> (movement director).<\/p>\n

Mozart’s enduring masterpiece\u00a0Don Giovanni<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will feature several role debuts including Jonathan McGovern<\/strong> in the title role, David Ireland<\/strong> (Leporello), formerly an Alvarez Young Artist, Australian soprano Sky Ingram<\/strong> (Donna Elvira) and Welsh tenor Trystan Ll<\/strong>?<\/strong>r Griffiths <\/strong>(Don Ottavio).\u00a0 The cast also includes two UK debuts \u2013 Brazilian soprano Camila Titinger<\/strong> (Donna Anna) and Canadian soprano Mireille Asselin<\/strong> (Zerlina).\u00a0 Paul Whelan<\/strong> (Commendatore) and former Alvarez Young Artist Thomas Faulkner<\/strong> (Masetto) complete the cast.\u00a0 Garsington Opera\u2019s Artistic Director Douglas Boyd<\/strong> conducts and former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company Michael Boyd<\/strong> (director) returns to direct together with Tom Piper<\/strong> (designer), after their success with Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/em> (2017) and Eugene Onegin<\/em> (2016) with Malcolm Rippeth <\/strong>(lighting designer).<\/p>\n

The Turn of the Screw<\/em><\/strong> with a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, based on the novella by Henry James, is considered to be one of Britten\u2019s finest stage works.\u00a0 The gripping story of a young governess, performed by Sophie Bevan<\/strong>, sent to a remote country house to care for two children, also features the tenor Ed Lyon<\/strong> (Prologue\/Quint), making his role debut.\u00a0 Also in the cast are Kathleen Wilkinson<\/strong> (Mrs Grose) and Katherine Broderick<\/strong> (Miss Jessel).\u00a0 Emerging American director Louisa Muller<\/strong> makes her UK debut together with two-time Olivier and Tony Award-winner Christopher Oram<\/strong> (designer) and Malcolm Rippeth<\/strong> (lighting designer).\u00a0 Richard Farnes<\/strong>, conductor of last year\u2019s admired Falstaff,<\/em> will conduct.<\/p>\n

Celebrating the start of a new partnership, the renowned Baroque and Classical chamber orchestra The English Concert<\/strong> makes its Garsington debut playing on period instruments in three concert performances of Monteverdi\u2019s Vespers of 1610<\/em><\/strong>. They will be joined by soloists Mary Bevan<\/strong>, Sophie Bevan<\/strong>, Benjamin Hulett<\/strong>, Robert Murray<\/strong> and James Way<\/strong>.\u00a0 Laurence Cummings<\/strong> returns to conduct with the Garsington Opera Chorus<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Marking the end of the 30th<\/sup> anniversary season, on the three concert days there will be an afternoon cricket match, tours of the Walled Garden and Green Theatre Recitals showcasing the Alvarez Young Artists, as well as the opportunity to visit the Getty Library.<\/p>\n

OPERAFIRST<\/em> AND FANTASIO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of an extensive Learning & Participation Programme, there will be a full performance of Fantasio<\/em> by the Alvarez Young Artists for local school pupils and adults, all of whom take part in preparatory workshops to introduce them to opera and deepen their enjoyment of the performance.<\/p>\n
