{"id":4801,"date":"2018-12-07T09:43:16","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T09:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4801"},"modified":"2018-12-07T09:43:16","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T09:43:16","slug":"treble-clefs-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4801","title":{"rendered":"Treble Clefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">St John\u2019s, Hollington, 6 December 2018<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Treble Clefs<\/em> returned to St John\u2019s, Hollington, for a well-supported Christmas concert which encouraged audience participation not just with the carols but with the familiar songs surrounding them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/treble-clefs.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/treble-clefs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the most impressive parts of the evening came from the less familiar and unexpected items. <em>Whisper! Whisper! <\/em>was certainly unknown to me as a Christmas Carol but was wonderfully effective and will surely become a standard very soon. This was preceded by a gentle lullaby, <em>Before the marvel of this night<\/em>, both American settings and both worth getting to know better.<\/p>\n<p>The other surprise was <em>O Holy Night<\/em> sung by young singers Maisie and Ben. It was one of those spine-tingling moments which we wished could have gone on far longer. The produced splendidly focussed voices, well balanced and accurate, with an emotional intensity which never became sentimental.<\/p>\n<p>The choir had opened with <em>Come to the Celebration <\/em>before we all sang <em>Joy to the World,<\/em> which segued into a medley of popular Christmas songs.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanist Stephen Page gave the choir a break when he gave two organ solos \u2013 the beautifully reflective <em>This is the truth<\/em> and a rousing jazz arrangement of <em>The Virgin Mary had a baby boy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was good to hear the verse introduction to <em>Winter Wonderland<\/em> and the cheery <em>Christmas is Here <\/em>\u2013 with its surprising overtones of <em>The Muppet Christmas Carol! &#8211; <\/em>\u00a0brought the evening to a fine climax.<\/p>\n<p><em>Treble Clefs<\/em> under their ebullient conductor Keith Richardson will certainly make a welcome return next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St John\u2019s, Hollington, 6 December 2018 Treble Clefs returned to St John\u2019s, Hollington, for a well-supported Christmas concert which encouraged audience participation not just with the carols but with the familiar songs surrounding them.
