{"id":4740,"date":"2018-11-10T17:28:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-10T17:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4740"},"modified":"2018-11-10T17:29:03","modified_gmt":"2018-11-10T17:29:03","slug":"music-at-st-johns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4740","title":{"rendered":"Music at St John\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">St John the Evangelist, Hollington, Saturday 10 November 2108<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andrew McGregor from St John the Baptist, Sedlescombe, was the guest organist last Saturday bringing a programme fitted to the remembrance weekend.<\/p>\n<p>He opened with a bright reading of Bach\u2019s <em>Fantasia in G <\/em>followed by a tribute to Hubert Parry. Three short pieces written in memory of the composer were sandwiched between the more triumphalist Hymn Preludes on <em>Dundee<\/em> and <em>St Anne. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A set of French pieces opened with Faure\u2019s familiar <em>Pavane<\/em> in an arrangement for organ, followed by two short works by Jeanne Demessieux based on Gregorian Chant. The French section ended with an arrangement of Charpentier\u2019s <em>Prelude to a Te Deum<\/em>, with the rhythms sounding more Handelian than French.<\/p>\n<p>The final three works were all equally familiar but none the less welcome. Mendelssohn\u2019s <em>War March of the Priests<\/em> lifted the spirits, only to be calmed again with Bach\u2019s Choral Prelude on <em>Liebster Jesu<\/em>, before Walton\u2019s popular <em>Crown Imperial. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The concert was one of a series of events to mark the 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary at St John\u2019s \u2013 the next of which will be given by the <em>Treble Clefs<\/em> on Thursday 6 December.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St John the Evangelist, Hollington, Saturday 10 November 2108 Andrew McGregor from St John the Baptist, Sedlescombe, was the guest organist last Saturday bringing a programme fitted to the remembrance weekend.
