{"id":4726,"date":"2018-11-07T09:32:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T09:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4726"},"modified":"2018-11-07T09:35:47","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T09:35:47","slug":"eno-revival-of-la-boheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4726","title":{"rendered":"ENO revival of La boh\u00e8me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Natalya Romaniw makes her ENO debut as Mim\u00ec in the fourth revival of Jonathan Miller\u2019s production of\u00a0<em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After forty years and more than eighty revivals of operas from across the operatic repertoire, legendary director Jonathan Miller\u2019s work returns to ENO in November with his beautiful 1930s-set\u00a0<em>La boh\u00e8me.\u00a0<\/em>Inspired by the Parisian aesthetic captured by photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau, this \u2018beautifully integrated piece of music theatre\u2019 (<em>The Guardian<\/em>) marks its fourth revival since its first outing in 2009. One of Britain\u2019s most exciting sopranos Natalya Romaniw makes her ENO debut as Mim\u00ec.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Natalya-Romaniw.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Natalya-Romaniw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of opera\u2019s iconic tragedies,\u00a0<em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em>\u00a0tells of the impoverished poet Rodolfo\u2019s love for the doomed Mim\u00ec during a freezing Paris winter, here updated from the 1830s to the 1930s. Miller\u2019s naturalistic storytelling along with Isabella Bywater\u2019s richly observed design make this a perfect example of a first-time opera for new audiences. The cast includes Jonathan Tetelman in his ENO debut as Rodolfo and ENO Harewood Artist Nadine Benjamin as Musetta, with three other Harewood Artists taking principal roles.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw is \u2018one of the outstanding sopranos of her generation\u2019 (<em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>), hugely acclaimed for her roles as Tatyana in<em>Eugene Onegin<\/em>\u00a0for Garsington Opera (2016) and Welsh Nationa Opera (2017) (\u2018a Tatyana in a thouasand\u2019 \u2013\u00a0<em>The Sunday Times<\/em>, \u2018one of the performances of the year\u2019 &#8211;\u00a0<em>What\u2019s On Stage<\/em>) and the title role of\u00a0<em>Jen<\/em><em>?<\/em><em>fa<\/em>\u00a0(\u2018a wonder to behold\u2019 \u2013\u00a0<em>The Daily Mail<\/em>) at Grange Park. She was nominated for the Breakthrough category at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Tetelman is a fast rising tenor (\u2018a total star\u2019 \u2013\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>) who makes his European debut in this production. Praised for his singing of Rodolfo at Tanglewood earlier this year, he has won First Prize in the 2016 New York Lyric Opera Competition. His singing of Puccini continues in 2019 with a Cavaradossi in\u00a0<em>Tosca<\/em>\u00a0at the Festival d\u2019Aix-en-Provence.<\/p>\n<p>Musetta is sung by ENO Harewood Artist Nadine Benjamin, in her second production with the company after her Clara in\u00a0<em>Porgy and Bess<\/em>\u00a0earlier in the season (\u2018one of the loveliest I\u2019ve heard\u2019 &#8211;\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>). She will appear as a guest on the\u00a0<em>Guilty Feminist<\/em>\u00a0podcast, recorded live at the London Coliseum on 27 November. With more than 50 million downloads the podcast is a comedy phenomenon, and will turn its attention to opera with a little help from Benjamin.<\/p>\n<p>Baritone Nicholas Lester sings Marcello, having sung as the title role opposite Romaniw in\u00a0<em>Eugene Onegin<\/em>\u00a0for WNO. \u00a0Bass David Soar returns for a second engagement of the season after his Jokanaan in\u00a0<em>Salome,\u00a0<\/em>singing Colline after performing the role at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, earlier in 2018. ENO Harewood Artist David Ireland shares the role, singing in four of the fifteen performances.<\/p>\n<p>Schaunard is sung by\u00a0Bo\u017eidar Smiljani?,\u00a0sharing the role with fellow ENO Harewood Artist Matthew Durkan. He debuted with the company earlier in the year as the Marquis in<em>\u00a0La traviata.\u00a0<\/em>Durkan has been seen in numerous ENO roles, most recently as Hel Helson in<em>\u00a0Paul Bunyan<\/em>\u00a0at Wilton\u2019s Music Hall, as well asDemetrius in\u00a0<em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, Fiorello in\u00a0<em>The Barber of Seville<\/em>\u00a0and Malcolm Fleet in the world premiere of Nico Muhly\u2019s\u00a0<em>Marnie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The cast is completed by\u00a0Simon Butteriss as Beno\u00eet and Alcindoro.<\/p>\n<p>Conducting the production is Alexander Joel, former General Music Director at Braunschweig State Theatre, making his ENO debut. With a varied and impressive career on the continent, he was last in London to conduct\u00a0<em>Rigoletto<\/em>\u00a0at the Royal Opera House. He has been praised for his more than 100 performances of\u00a0<em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em>\u00a0(\u2018Outstanding\u2019 &#8211;\u00a0<em>The Spectator<\/em>), having conducted it more than 100 times.
