The Brighton Phil at Brighton Dome<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong> is pleased to present their exciting new season of Sunday afternoon concerts at Brighton Dome, when they will be joined by an array of talented musicians including Freddy Kempf & Steven Osborne (piano), Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin), Thomas Carroll (cello) and Ben Gernon (conductor), to name but a few.<\/p>\n

To open the season on Sunday 14 October, Conductor Laureate Barry Wordsworth and Brighton Festival Chorus present a feast of glorious music by Elgar, Parry, Handel & Shostakovich. Brighton Festival Chorus celebrate their 50th anniversary this year and they recently recorded a number of Elgar\u2019s works for choir and orchestra with and Barry Wordsworth, including some of those to be performed at this concert.<\/p>\n

The concert opens in celebratory style with Shostakovich\u2019s lively\u00a0Festive<\/em>\u00a0Overture<\/em>\u00a0and Handel\u2019s choral masterpiece\u00a0Zadok the Priest.<\/em><\/p>\n

Parry\u2019s\u00a0From<\/em>\u00a0Death to Life\u00a0<\/em>– a symphonic poem for orchestra in two connected movements – was a 1914 Brighton Festival commission and portrays the composer\u2019s personal reaction to World War One\u00a0and the spiritual triumph of life over death.<\/p>\n

Elgar\u2019s concert overture\u00a0Cockaigne\u00a0<\/em>is a musical evocation of the streets of London in Edwardian times, whilst\u00a0Great is the Lord<\/em>\u00a0is a beautiful setting of Psalm 48 and\u00a0O Hearken Thou<\/em>\u00a0was written in 1911 for the Coronation of King George V.\u00a0Scenes from the Bavarian<\/em>\u00a0Highlands<\/em>\u00a0was inspired by a family holiday and Elgar\u2019s wife Alice adapted local songs for the choral text, giving\u00a0them sub-titles in recollection of favourite places visited during the holiday.<\/p>\n
