{"id":4535,"date":"2018-08-04T10:17:53","date_gmt":"2018-08-04T09:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4535"},"modified":"2018-08-04T10:17:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-04T09:17:53","slug":"eno-paul-bunyan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4535","title":{"rendered":"ENO: Paul Bunyan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">ENO Studio Live<\/span> continues with the company\u2019s first ever production of\u00a0<em>Paul Bunyan<\/em>\u00a0at Wilton\u2019s Music Hall, with Simon Russell Beale as the voice of Bunyan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Opens\u00a0<\/em><em>Monday 03 September at\u00a0<\/em><em>7.30pm at Wilton\u2019s Music Hall\u00a0<\/em><em>(6 performances)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following the sell-out success of\u00a0<em>Acis and Galatea<\/em>\u00a0in June, ENO continues Studio Live, a programme of work to bring the immense power of opera to more intimate environments, with Benjamin Britten\u2019s\u00a0<em>Paul Bunyan<\/em>. In a first for the company, it will perform in the historic setting of Wilton\u2019s Music Hall, the world\u2019s oldest grand music hall and a landmark of East London.<\/p>\n<p><em>Paul Bunyan<\/em>, with its libretto by one of England\u2019s greatest poets W.H. Auden, is a retelling of the great American folk tale featuring the titular giant. It is one of Britten\u2019s most eclectic scores, with blues, folk and hymns incorporated into a story of civilisation\u2019s destructive relationship to the ecology around it, and the dangers of the American Dream.<\/p>\n<p>In his first performance with ENO, Olivier Award-winning actor Simon Russell Beale provides the offstage voice of the titular giant. Known as \u2018the greatest stage actor of his generation\u2019, (<em>The Independent<\/em>), Beale\u2019s recorded voiceover stands in for the physical appearance of the lumberjack with the 3.7 mile-stride. He is known for innumerable leading roles on the stage and screen, but also for his voice work: he provided the voice of George Smiley in the acclaimed BBC Radio 4 complete adaptation of John le Carr\u00e9\u2019s Smiley novels.<\/p>\n<p>ENO Studio Live was begun partly as a showcase for emerging talent at ENO, and\u00a0<em>Paul Bunyan<\/em>\u00a0includes four ENO Harewood Artists, exceptionally talented early-career singers given principal roles as part of their training at ENO.<\/p>\n<p>ENO Harewood Artist Elgan Ll?r Thomas takes the role of Paul\u2019s bookkeeper Johnny Inkslinger, having been praised for his \u2018perfectly targeted\u2026 demented passion\u2019 (<em>Bachtrack<\/em>) in his ENO debut in another Britten opera,\u00a0<em>The Turn of Screw<\/em>, at Regent\u2019s Park in June. Harewood Artist Rowan Pierce makes her ENO debut as Paul\u2019s daughter Tiny. She will return to ENO to sing Papagena in\u00a0<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Harewood Artists William Morgan and Matthew Durkan sing Tiny\u2019s lover Hot Biscuit Slim and Paul\u2019s antagonistic foreman Hel Helson respectively. Morgan shared the role of Quint with Elgan Ll?r Thomas for\u00a0<em>The Turn of the Screw<\/em>. He was also seen last year as Phaeton in the inaugural Studio Live,\u00a0<em>The Day After.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Durkan has taken a number of roles with ENO in recent years, including Demetrius in\u00a0<em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, Fiorello in\u00a0<em>The Barber of Seville<\/em>\u00a0and Malcolm Fleet in the world premiere of Nico Muhly\u2019s\u00a0<em>Marnie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the roles are taken by members of the award-winning ENO Chorus, who create the dreamlike ensemble of cooks, cats, dogs and lumberjacks of the great American forest. Bringing Chorus members into principle roles continues a practice from 2017\u2019s Studio Live, and will also be seen in September\u2019s production of\u00a0<em>Salome<\/em>\u00a0at the Coliseum.<\/p>\n<p>Director Jamie Manton\u00a0is the Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of film and theatre production company Duelling Productions. His 2017 production with Studio Live,\u00a0<em>The Day After,<\/em>\u00a0was praised for its \u2018impressive conviction\u2019 (<em>The Guardian<\/em>) and was included in\u00a0<em>The Observer\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>Ten Best Classical Performances of 2017. It was later revived at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Productions that he has worked on as Staff Director at ENO include\u00a0<em>The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Tristan and Isolde\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Winter\u2019s Tale<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Designer Camilla Clarke, who also designed\u00a0<em>The Day After<\/em>\u00a0with Manton, is a winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design. Recent credits include\u00a0<em>Bad Roads<\/em>\u00a0(2017) at the Royal Court Theatre with Vicky Featherstone.<\/p>\n<p>Conductor Matthew Kofi Waldren is a Mackerras Fellow at ENO, a programme to provide exceptional emerging conductors with an opportunity to develop their skills. Nominated for Best Newcomer in the 2017 International Opera Awards, he conducted a performance of the\u00a0<em>The Marriage of Figaro<\/em>\u00a0for ENO in April, and was widely praised for his conducting of Opera Holland Park\u2019s\u00a0<em>La traviata<\/em>\u00a0in May (\u2018extremely strong\u2019 &#8211;\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Paul Bunyan<\/em>\u00a0is the third Britten opera to be performed by ENO in 2018 after\u00a0<em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Turn of Screw<\/em>, and will be followed by\u00a0<em>War Requiem<\/em>\u00a0in November.
