Brighton Early Music Festival is bringing 700 years of music from 17 European countries to Brighton this autumn*.\u00a0 Taking its inspiration from a somewhat topical theme, the 2018 Festival explores Britain\u2019s long and often tempestuous relationship with the rest of the European continent from medieval times onwards.\u00a0 Artistic Director\u00a0Deborah Roberts<\/b>\u00a0says:\u00a0\u201cIn this of all years it seems only right to celebrate and explore Britain\u2019s relationship with Europe over the centuries, through programmes highlighting important events, collaborations and even conflicts of the past.\u00a0 Some of these stories will have a striking familiarity, and we are hoping to spark stimulating discussion and a sense of exploration as well as presenting a glorious selection of music from around Europe.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n

Festival highlights include music from the 13th<\/sup>-century Lewes Priory Breviary performed by Spanish ensemble\u00a0Resonet\u00a0<\/b>and BREMF Community Choir (St Bartholomew\u2019s Church, 28\u00a0<\/sup>October); music by Reformation Remainers Tallis and Byrd from\u00a0BREMF Consort of Voices\u00a0<\/b>(St Bartholomew\u2019s Church, 10 November); festive music for an 18th<\/sup>-century\u00a0 Swedish royal wedding (St George\u2019s Church, 2 November); and choral & orchestral music for peace by Charpentier, Handel, Purcell and Delalande to celebrate Armistice Day, with a stellar line-up of young soloists including Handel Singing Competition winnerHelen Charlston<\/b>\u00a0(St Martin\u2019s Church, 11 November).\u00a0 Royal Wedding soprano\u00a0Elin Manahan Thomas<\/b>\u00a0and lutenist\u00a0Elizabeth Kenny<\/b>\u00a0will perform songs reflecting Elizabeth I\u2019s marriage prevarications in a \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 (St Paul\u2019s Church, 27 November).<\/div>\n

Continuing the Festival\u2019s track record of staging early operas (recently featured in BBC Four documentary\u00a0Unsung Heroines<\/i>\u00a0presented by Danielle de Niese), the 2018 Festival includes a double bill of early Italian and English opera.\u00a0 Monteverdi\u2019s\u00a0Ballo delle ingrate\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<\/i>Blow\u2019s\u00a0Venus and Adonis<\/i>\u00a0are directed by\u00a0Thomas Guthrie<\/b>, with a cast of some of the best young vocal talent emerging on the scene, and street dance choreographed by\u00a0J P Omari<\/b>(The Old Market, 6-8 November).<\/div>\n

Strongly committed to developing and mentoring young artists, the Festival features a showcase of emerging ensembles who are part of the Festival\u2019s\u00a0Early Music Live!<\/i>\u00a0young artists\u2019 scheme (St Paul\u2019s Church, 3 November), as well as appearances by ensembles whose early careers were developed by the scheme (Fieri Consort<\/b>, 9 November;\u00a0Lux Musicae London<\/b>, 4 November;\u00a0Flauti d\u2019echo<\/b>, 10 November).<\/div>\n
