{"id":4388,"date":"2018-05-28T17:30:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-28T16:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4388"},"modified":"2018-05-28T17:30:53","modified_gmt":"2018-05-28T16:30:53","slug":"catsfield-quire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4388","title":{"rendered":"Catsfield Quire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the 18<sup>th\u00a0\u00a0 &amp;<\/sup> 19<sup>th<\/sup> centuries St. Laurence Church had a Quire, a group of singers and other villagers who played perhaps fiddles, a cello, a flute, a clarionet maybe even a bassoon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/St-Laurence-Catsfield.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/St-Laurence-Catsfield.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The musicians having played for a dance on the Saturday night\u00a0 would turn up on Sunday together with the singers to lead the service up in a gallery at the west end of the church.<\/p>\n<p>Who played what or who sang is not known but what they sang and played is, thanks largely to one man, Canon Kenneth H MacDermott.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century when he was curate of Hurstpierpoint he began his research into this music prompted by an old manuscript book he was given. He wrote to over 200 church choirmasters seeking information about church bands and their music. With the resultant information he was able publish a book entitled \u2019The Old Church Gallery Minstrels\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst the documents he received were 9 books from Catsfield, some from Miss Louisa Blackman (grand-daughter of a Robert Blackman) and some from a Mr T C Poulter, whose\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0great-grandfather, a Mr Crouch, was a musician in the band.<\/p>\n<p>They of course were all hand written and most quite tricky to decipher, they contained 175 different items of music.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 25 years ago some of this robust music, with strong tunes and words, was published in a book entitled \u2019The Singing Seat\u2019 (another name for the west gallery).<\/p>\n<p>So to celebrate <strong>Sussex Day<\/strong>, Sussex Harmony, a West Gallery Quire, is returning to Catsfield to perform a selection of these pieces interwoven with readings and snippets of history from the period.<\/p>\n<p>The concert is on 16<sup>th<\/sup> June in the Village Hall starting at 7.30p.m.<\/p>\n<p>It will be free to come in BUT there is a retiring collection.
