So we finish the series of Fantasias.<\/em><\/strong>..<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got\u00a0Bach<\/strong>\u2019s great\u00a0Fantasia in G<\/u>\u00a0(now sometimes called\u00a0Pi<\/em>\u00e8<\/em>ce\u00a0d\u2019orgue<\/em>) – and two monumental virtuosic works written some years before – one by the great\u00a0Sweelinck<\/strong>\u00a0and one by\u00a0Charles Racquet<\/strong>, who was appointed organist of Notre-Dame in 1618 at the age of 21. He was a musician to Marie de Medici… His Fantaisie – one of the most substantial pieces of the French Baroque was written to\u00a0“show what could be done at the organ\u201d.<\/p>\n

In between there will be the first of\u00a0Franck<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Six Pi<\/u>\u00e8<\/u>ces<\/u>.\u00a0(PS.<\/em>\u00a0Some wanted a reminder that the complete Franck series starts this Friday, 11 May.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Whilst I was going to play\u00a0Eben<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Two\u00a0Fantasie\u00a0chorals<\/em>, I thought we\u2019d have more fun… So I\u2019m going to play two short movements from his\u00a0Faust.\u00a0<\/u>The second of these is a vivid portrayal of the students in the bar becoming more\u00a0roudy! Probably fairly tame considering some of the student bars on campus, but it\u2019s still quite a piece!<\/p>\n

And to end one of\u00a0Vierne<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Pi<\/u>\u00e8<\/u>ces de Fantaisie<\/u>\u00a0– the ever-optimistic\u00a0Carillon de Westminster<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n
