It was good then to start this concert with a suite of dances drawn from his own score for the ballet <em>Anne Garland. <\/em>The story comes from Hardy\u2019s <em>The Trumpet Major<\/em> and we heard dances for a ball, dances for a wedding and a final, reflective <em>Epilogue. <\/em>The style\u00a0echoes the late romantic world of Malcolm Arnold (and even at times Malcolm Williamson!) and the dances effectively reflect the period and the events. The <em>Epilogue<\/em> by contrast avoids melancholy while highlighting the gentle pain of potential loss. There was no sense that the score did not have a place alongside the rest of the programme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ken-Roberts.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ken-Roberts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lalo\u2019s <em>Symphonie Espagnole<\/em> is best known for its final movement and rarely heard complete. Violinist Amber Emson was fierce in the opening <em>Allegro non troppo<\/em> and elegant in the flowing <em>Intermezzo. <\/em>\u00a0Some momentary lapses in intonation from the orchestra did not distract from the overall impact.<\/p>\n<p>Christ Church has a difficult acoustic for a large orchestra, the long reverberation tending to muddy the sound. Dvorak\u2019s New World Symphony was at its best in the quieter moments, with some strong solo playing, though the brass often managed to cut through to fine effect. \u00a0The central section of the third movement, closer to Smetana than the rest of the work, flowed with an exhilarating sense of enthusiasm, and the balance was at its best in the final movement where rhythms were tighter and cleaner.<\/p>\n<p>The orchestra returns to Bexhill on 3 June as part of the Bexhill Festival.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christ Church, St Leonards, Sunday 25 March 2018 We know Kenneth Roberts better as a conductor than a composer but he has a large number of works to his name, many unperformed locally.
