{"id":4175,"date":"2018-03-11T20:16:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-11T20:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=4175"},"modified":"2018-03-11T20:16:23","modified_gmt":"2018-03-11T20:16:23","slug":"have-i-got-tunes-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=4175","title":{"rendered":"Have I got Tunes for You"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Chris Beaumont at Opus Theatre<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Saturday 10 March 2018<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Chris Beaumont is a self-taught but exceptional musician, whose love to the xylophone has made him the leading expert on the music of Sir Patrick Moore. While most of us recall the familiar astronomer from <em>The Sky at Night,<\/em> many will also remember his felicity as a xylophonist of considerable ability. Fewer will be aware of the large amount of music he wrote for the instrument.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Beaumont.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/C-Beaumont.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chris Beaumont not only performed a wide range of music, most of it in his own arrangements, but brought us many of Sir Patrick\u2019s own compositions. He opened with <em>Freefall<\/em>, then a march entitled <em>Halley\u2019s Comet <\/em>and later we were enthralled by movements from a suite which opens with Dragonflies and moves through hedgehogs to earthworms. The final piece from Sir Patrick was a jolly rag called <em>Halley\u2019s Rag. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Between these items we heard the Clog Dance from <em>La fille mal guardee, <\/em>together with wood blocks and glockenspiel, and <em>Elephants<\/em> from Saint Saens\u2019 <em>Carnival of the Animals. <\/em>The first half came to an end with a virtuoso rendition of Grieg\u2019s <em>From the Hall of the Mountain King<\/em> and the theme music from <em>QI.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After a short break the second half opened with a brand new piece \u2013 <em>The Chase <\/em>by Opus Theatre\u2019s Director and Composer Polo Piatti &#8211; a charming composition and totally in keeping with the easy flowing music of the rest of the evening. Two movements from Schumann\u2019s <em>Kinderszenen <\/em>followed and more popular items including music from <em>Star Wars<\/em> and the <em>Flight of the Bumble Bee. <\/em>Drawing toward a close, we encountered the theme music from <em>Allo, Allo<\/em> and finally the theme from <em>Have I got News for You. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Throughout, Chris Beaumont had been loyally and expertly accompanied by Derek Carden.<\/p>\n<p>The audience was a little disappointing for what was essentially a popular, not to say family, event and let us hope Chris will feel encouraged to return to entertain us again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Beaumont at Opus Theatre Saturday 10 March 2018 Chris Beaumont is a self-taught but exceptional musician, whose love to the xylophone has made him the leading expert on the music of Sir Patrick Moore.
