{"id":3866,"date":"2017-10-22T08:50:04","date_gmt":"2017-10-22T07:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=3866"},"modified":"2017-10-22T08:50:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-22T07:50:04","slug":"stephen-page-in-concert-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=3866","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Page in Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Emmanuel Centre, Battle, Saturday 21 October 2017<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephen Page brought a genial mix of music and song to the Emmanuel Centre in Battle as part of this year\u2019s Battle Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The first half was loosely focused on classical, if often very familiar, pieces, opening with Susato\u2019s <em>Mohrentanz<\/em> \u2013 probably the most well-known piece of Tudor music still in the repertoire. The next three works for organ brought together a romantic work by Scotson Clark, his <em>Marche des Fantomes<\/em>, Buxtehude\u2019s Choral Prelude <em>Now Come Redeemer<\/em> and the Rondo from Purcell\u2019s <em>Abdelazer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stephen then moved to the piano, commencing with a delightful rendition of Chaminade\u2019s <em>Automne, <\/em>moving through works by Zez Confrey and John Ireland to settle eventually on Bach\u2019s <em>Air on a G string. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Astor Piazolla\u2019s gently melancholic tango <em>Mumuki<\/em> \u00a0gave way to Robert Farnon\u2019s <em>Jumping Bean<\/em> before he returned to the organ for a rousing rendition of Strauss\u2019 <em>Radetzky March \u2013 <\/em>even if the audience failed to provide the traditional clapping along to the march.<\/p>\n<p>The second half was given over to music from stage and screen, touching on scores from <em>The Lady Killers, The Misson <\/em>and <em>The Deer Hunter. <\/em>After the exhilaration of <em>The Entry of the Gladiators<\/em> the solo part of the evening wound down with <em>Send in the Clowns<\/em> and the waltz tune from <em>Genevieve.<\/em> At this point we were invited to join in a sing-along to familiar songs from <em>The King and I, The Sound of Music <\/em>and <em>My Fair Lady \u2013 <\/em>with the words clearly displayed for us on the overhead screens.<\/p>\n<p>This should have been the end but Stephen was persuaded to provide an encore which he did \u2013 singing for us Sydney Carter\u2019s <em>Down Below, <\/em>whose wistful images send us off home smiling.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emmanuel Centre, Battle, Saturday 21 October 2017 Stephen Page brought a genial mix of music and song to the Emmanuel Centre in Battle as part of this year\u2019s Battle Festival.
