Called \u2018riveting&#8217; by<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Guardian<\/em>\u00a0and \u2019superb\u2019 by\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Sunday Telegraph<\/em>\u00a0in a five-star review, the original run won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production.<\/p>\n<p>One of Handel\u2019s outstanding comic works, the tale of Queen Partenope and her three suitors features cross-dressing, mistaken identity and the crazed politics of romance. In Alden\u2019s production, which has also been seen to great acclaim at the Sydney Opera House and the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House since its London premiere, the action is relocated from mythical ancient Naples to the salons and drawing rooms of the socialite set of twenties Paris, with design inspired by the surrealist photography of Man Ray.<\/p>\n<p>The production will feature an outstanding cast showcasing some of the best British singers at work today, led by Sarah Tynan (\u2019some of the finest baroque singing you\u2019ll hear anywhere\u2019 \u2013\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>) in the title role. Sarah\u2019s previous Handel roles at ENO include a \u2019superbly beautiful\u2019 (<em>Opera Today<\/em>) Romilda in the 2014 performances of\u00a0<em>Xerxes<\/em>, with Marzelline in 2013\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fidelio\u00a0<\/em>and Zerlina<em>\u00a0<\/em>in 2012\u2019s Don Giovanni being other highlights. This marks her role debut.<\/p>\n<p>Mezzo soprano Patricia Bardon will sing Queen Partenope\u2019s dashing suitor Arsace. Patricia most recently sang at ENO in 2014 as Mary Magdalene in\u00a0<em>The Gospel According to the Other Mary,\u00a0<\/em>described as \u2019the performance of her life\u2019 by\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Guardian<\/em>. Her strength as a Handelian has been praised, giving an \u2019utterly melting\u2019 (<em>New York Times<\/em>) performance as Zenobia in The English Concert\u2019s 2013<em>Radamisto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Countertenor James Laing sings as the shy suitor Armindo. James has previously appeared at ENO as Nireno in\u00a0<em>Julius Caesar<\/em>\u00a0in 2012. He has sung Handel\u2019s operas on numerous other occasions, including as Tirinto in\u00a0<em>Imeneo<\/em>\u00a0for the 2016 G\u00f6ttingen International Handel Festival and as Medoro for Welsh National Opera\u2019s 2015\u00a0<em>Orlando.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Returning ENO favourite Robert Murray sings Emilio, the suitor warring for the Queen\u2019s hand. In addition to his starring roles here in<em>The Pirates of Penzance\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0The Mikado,<\/em>\u00a0his singing of Handel in\u00a0<em>Acis e Galatea<\/em>\u00a0at Wigmore Hall in 2013 was called \u2019splendid\u2019 by\u00a0<em>The<\/em><em>Observer<\/em>. Rosmira, the former lover of Arsace in disguise as the male Eurimene, is sung by Stephanie Windsor Lewis, who debuted at ENO last year as Suzuki in Anthony Minghella\u2019s production of\u00a0<em>Madam Butterfly<\/em>. The cast is completed by ENO Harewood Artist Matthew Durkan as Ormonte.<\/p>\n<p>Conductor Christian Curnyn is well-known as one of baroque\u2019s foremost interpreters in the UK: \u2019Find anything exciting happening in period opera in the UK and Curnyn will be involved\u2019 (<em>The Spectator<\/em>). He founded the Early Opera Company in 1994 in order to champion the relevance of baroque opera, and has won great acclaim for his recordings and performances in the area since.
