{"id":3402,"date":"2017-02-06T20:51:51","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T20:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=3402"},"modified":"2017-02-06T20:51:51","modified_gmt":"2017-02-06T20:51:51","slug":"brighton-philharmonic-orchestra-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=3402","title":{"rendered":"Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Brighton Dome, 5 February 2017<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/THOMAS-CARROLL.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3403\" alt=\"THOMAS-CARROLL\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/THOMAS-CARROLL.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Carroll, looking as if he\u2019s about to win a snooker tournament in a snazzy red waistcoat, has a knack of bending almost double to coax intricately nuanced pianissimo playing from his players. It\u2019s effective too. Almost all the playing in this very pleasant concert was sensitive and well balanced.<\/p>\n<p>After a momentarily ragged start Mozart\u2019s K201, with all its sophisticated simplicity, soon settled into a suitably crisp, sparkling opening allegro with the following movements in careful contrast, For both this, and the Haydn which came next, the Brighton Philharmonic was reduced to just 36 players \u2013 strings with two horns and two oboes ensuring that the mood remained light, tight and classical.<\/p>\n<p>The Haydn C major concerto (rediscovered as recently as 1961) is a resolutely cheerful work and multi-talented Carroll conducting from his cello appeared to smile from the sheer joy of the music almost continually. He achieved a fine rapport with the orchestra and his cello sound was lushly mellow especially in the beautiful <i>Adagio<\/i> and the well controlled <i>Allegro Molto<\/i> finale.<\/p>\n<p>And so to the concluding Mendelssohn <i>Italian Symphony<\/i> for a happy ending to a sunny concert \u2013 and a few more players and instruments added to the mix. The opening was lively and incisive with some clearly articulated string work in the busy passages which typify much of Mendelssohn\u2019s orchestral writing.
