Jonathan Miller\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> highly acclaimed and enduringly popular production of\u00a0Rigoletto<\/em>\u00a0returns to the London Coliseum for its 13th<\/sup>\u00a0revival. First seen in 1982, this celebrated retelling of Verdi\u2019s timeless story of jealousy, love and betrayal is played out against the backdrop of New York\u2019s Little Italy in the 1950\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\"rigoletto\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Based on Victor Hugo\u2019s\u00a0play\u00a0Le roi s\u2019amuse<\/em>\u00a0(The King has fun<\/em>),\u00a0Rigoletto\u00a0<\/em>is one of Verdi\u2019s best-loved operatic masterpieces. Verdi\u2019s score contains some of the most famous and memorable melodies in all opera with \u2018La donna\u00a0\u00e8\u00a0mobile\u2019 (\u2018Women Abandon Us\u2019) being particularly well known. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester\u00a0Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera’s original title,\u00a0La maledizione<\/em>\u00a0(The Curse), refers to the curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigoletto’s encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda likewise falls in love with the Duke with catastrophic consequences.<\/p>\n

Over the last four decades Jonathan Miller\u2019s much-loved productions have been at the heart of ENO\u2019s work with over 1044 performances of his productions to date. The original creative team for\u00a0Rigoletto<\/em>\u00a0comprises designers Patrick Robertson and Rosemary Vercoe, lighting designer Robert Bryan and choreographer Tommy Shaw. Richard Armstrong returns to ENO to conduct, following his performances of\u00a0Madam Butterfly<\/em>\u00a0for the Company in May 2016.<\/p>\n

Leading the cast in the title role is baritone Nicholas Pallesen. He last sung for the Company in David Alden\u2019s production of\u00a0The Queen of Spades<\/em>in 2015 where he was seen as a \u2018dashing presence, both vocally and physically as Prince Yeletsky\u2019 (Whatsonstage.com).\u00a0\u00a0 He also performed the role of Fieramosca in Terry Gilliam\u2019s five star production of\u00a0Benvenuto Cellini<\/em>\u00a0in 2014.<\/p>\n

American tenor Joshua Guerrero makes his UK and ENO debut as the Duke of Mantua. A member of LA Opera\u2019s Young Artist programme and an Operalia prize winner, he has performed numerous roles at LA Opera and with the LA Philharmonic as well as at Ravinia Festival, Chicago andTeatro de la Maestranza, Seville.<\/p>\n

Sydney Mancasola makes her ENO debut as Gilda. A current member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt, she has also performed with Komische Oper Berlin, Opera Theatre of St Louis and Palm Beach Opera.<\/p>\n

British mezzo soprano Madeleine Shaw returns to the role of Maddalena after acclaimed performances in 2009. A former ENO young singer, she last performed with ENO as Magdalene in Richard Jones\u2019s Olivier Award-winning production of\u00a0The Mastersingers of Nuremberg.\u00a0<\/em>She has recently performed as Wellgunde and Rossweisse in Opera North\u2019s Ring Cycle.<\/p>\n

Former ENO Harewood Artist Barnaby Rea makes his role debut as Sparafucile. He last appeared with the Company as Don Basilio in Jonathan Miller\u2019s production of\u00a0The Barber of Seville<\/em>\u00a0in 2015 and recently joined the solo ensemble at Oper Frankfurt. Other roles for ENO include Colline in\u00a0La boh\u00e8me<\/em>, Nourabad in\u00a0The Pearl Fishers<\/em>\u00a0and Lodovico in\u00a0Otello<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Current ENO Harewood Artists Matthew Durkan and Andri Bj\u00f6rn R\u00f3bertsson are Marullo and Ceprano respectively. \u00a0Completing the cast are Nicholas Folwell as Monterone and Anthony Flaum as Borsa.<\/p>\n

Rigoletto\u00a0<\/em>opens on\u00a0<\/em>Thursday 2 February 2017 at 7.30pm for 9 performances \u2013 2, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 28 February at 7.30pm and 4, 25 February at 6.30pm<\/p>\n
