The 70th Aldeburgh Festival<\/strong> takes place from\u00a09 \u2013 25 June<\/strong>\u00a02017<\/strong>. One of the strands of programming will be a celebration of Snape Maltings and its 50th anniversary of the Concert Hall which opened in 1967.<\/p>\n

A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2017 festival opens on\u00a0Friday 9 June<\/strong>\u00a0with a new production of Britten\u2019s\u00a0A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>\u00a0directed and designed by\u00a0Netia Jones<\/strong>. In 1967 seven years after its premiere, Britten chose his new opera to open the Snape Maltings Concert Hall which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017. Conducted by\u00a0Ryan Wigglesworth<\/strong>\u00a0the cast features internationally renowned singers including\u00a0Iestyn Davies<\/strong>\u00a0(Oberon),\u00a0Sophie Bevan<\/strong>\u00a0(Tytania),\u00a0Clive Bayley<\/strong>\u00a0(Theseus),\u00a0Matthew Rose<\/strong>\u00a0(Bottom) and\u00a0Andrew Shore\u00a0<\/strong>(Quince).\u00a0Netia Jones<\/strong>\u00a0returns to Aldeburgh to bring to life this captivating tale of lovers, rustics and fairies with four performances on\u00a09, 11, 12\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a014 June<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Featured Composers<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Olga Neuwirth<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0J\u00f6rg Widmann<\/strong>\u00a0are two of the featured composers in the 2017 festival. Despite being born only five years apart in 1968 in Austria and 1973 in Germany respectively, they have chosen contrasting compositional directions. Neuwirth\u2019s output remains influenced by the composer Luigi Nono\u2019s radical politics and includes film and stage work, as well as much music which requires electro-acoustic treatment. Widmann has chosen to work more regularly with standard classical ensembles and instruments, although they both share an extraordinary imagination which produces music of great colour and playfulness. Highlights at the festival include Olga Neuwirth\u2019s\u00a0Maudite soit la guerre<\/em>\u00a0– A Film Music War Requiem<\/em>. One of the first anti-war films in history,\u00a0Maudite soit la Guerre<\/em>, was made in 1914 shortly before the First World War. In 2013 Neuwirth wrote a score to the silent movie which will receive its UK premiere by the\u00a0London Sinfonietta<\/strong>\u00a0under the baton of\u00a0Gerry Cornelius<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a010 June<\/strong>. Widmann\u2019s\u00a0Viola Concerto<\/em>\u00a0also receives its UK premiere by the work\u2019s dedicatee\u00a0Antoine Tamestit<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0CBSO<\/strong>\u00a0and its new Music Director\u00a0Mirga\u00a0<\/strong>Gra\u017einyt?-Tyla<\/strong>. Tamestit describes the work as, \u2018a unique audience experience\u2019 including inventive playing techniques such as the imitation of a sitar, percussive use of the viola\u2019s body and the soloists having a theatrical role.<\/p>\n

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Mirga\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Gra\u017einyt?-Tyla<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0CBSO<\/strong>\u2019s newly appointed Music Director\u00a0Mirga\u00a0<\/strong>Gra\u017einyt?-Tyla<\/strong>\u00a0makes her Aldeburgh debut with two concerts. On\u00a017 June<\/strong>, Gra\u017einyt?-Tyla and the CBSO raise an anniversary toast to Snape Maltings with the overture Britten wrote for the concert hall\u2019s opening night \u2013\u00a0The Building of the House<\/em>. This is set alongside two Beethoven masterpieces: his\u00a0Leonore Overture<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Symphony No. 5\u00a0<\/strong>and the UK premiere of Widmann\u2019s\u00a0Viola Concerto<\/em>. On\u00a018 June<\/strong>\u00a0Gra\u017einyt?-Tyla and the CBSO perform Stravinsky\u2019s\u00a0Petrushka<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Snape Maltings \u2013 its past, present and future<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are ambitious plans for further development of the site over the next 5-10 years, including redeveloping further derelict maltings buildings in order to expand the creative campus and the organisation\u2019s artist development, learning and inclusion programmes, which run throughout the year. The masterplan for the site development will be unveiled in June 2017 as the Concert Hall\u2019s 50th anniversary is celebrated. The unifying of the site has begun and will now be known by the single name Snape Maltings with a new logo and brand inspired by reedbeds that extend from the site far into the Alde Estuary. The existing Aldeburgh Music and Snape Maltings websites have been replaced by a new, unified Snape Maltings website (www.snapemaltings.co.uk<\/a>) which showcases all aspects of the site \u2013 its music and arts offering alongside its natural environment and shops.<\/p>\n
