{"id":3309,"date":"2016-11-30T09:28:16","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T09:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=3309"},"modified":"2016-11-30T09:28:16","modified_gmt":"2016-11-30T09:28:16","slug":"garsington-opera-commissions-major-new-work-from-david-sawer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=3309","title":{"rendered":"GARSINGTON OPERA COMMISSIONS MAJOR NEW WORK FROM DAVID SAWER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Leading British composer <strong>David Sawer<\/strong> and celebrated young playwright Rory Mullarkey have been commissioned by Garsington Opera to write a new work &#8211;\u00a0<i>The Skating Rink\u00a0<\/i>(based on the novel by Chilean author Roberto Bola\u00f1o).\u00a0 It will have its world premiere during the 2018 season and will be Garsington Opera\u2019s first new festival commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/David-Sawer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3310\" alt=\"david-sawer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/David-Sawer.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Douglas Boyd, Artistic Director of Garsington Opera said:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018I am delighted that we have reached a stage in our development as a company where we will be presenting a major new festival commission. \u00a0I strongly believe in our responsibility as musicians to create new works of art that will stand alongside great works of the past, both for audiences today and in the future.\u00a0 David Sawer is one of the leading lights of our generation and has a wonderful flair for dramatic character.\u00a0 Together with librettist Rory Mullarkey they are creating a work that is theatrically thrilling and musically exhilarating. This is a very important step for us and I can\u2019t wait to share this new work with our audience and the wider world.\u2019\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The 2017 season that runs from 1 June to 30 July features four opera productions\u00a0 and a community piece \u2013 Handel\u2019s\u00a0<i>Semele<\/i>, Debussy\u2019s\u00a0<i>Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande<\/i>, Mozart\u2019s\u00a0<i>Le nozze di Figaro<\/i>\u00a0and Rossini\u2019s\u00a0<i>Il turco in Italia<\/i>.
