This incorporates a Beethoven theme and Schiller&#8217;s &#8216;Ode to Joy&#8217;,\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>intertwined with\u00a0Gregorian plainsong. The Choir wishes to be welcomed back to\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>its old haunt, the White Rock Theatre (formerly Pavilion), where it famously<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>produced Beethoven&#8217;s 9th to a record audience under Sir Malcolm Sargent with\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>the &#8216;Southern\u00a0<\/b><b>Philharmonic&#8217; orchestra in celebration of the Coronation.<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/white-rock.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3260\" alt=\"white-rock\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/white-rock.jpg\" width=\"284\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This was in 1953, of course, but in the 1930s, the choir had already performed Beethoven&#8217;s 9th\u00a04 times at the White Rock Pavilion under Julius Harrison and the prestigious Hastings Municipal\u00a0Orchestra, always to great acclaim.\u00a0Today&#8217;s music director of both choir and orchestra, Marcio\u00a0da Silva, is ambitiously rekindling the spirit of excellence in classical music that prevailed prewar\u00a0when,\u00a0three years in a row (1935-37),\u00a0the \u00a0Hastings Municipal Orchestra broadcast from the White\u00a0Rock\u00a0Pavilion on BBC Radio\u00a0in the prime\u00a0spot after the King&#8217;s Speech on Christmas Day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Beethoven&#8217;s entire 9th Symphony will be performed with the full professional orchestra, the\u00a0Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra&#8217;s first public outing. Philip O&#8217;Meara&#8217;s choral piece is called &#8216;No Man&#8217;\u00a0and uses the fine words of great writers, Victor Hugo, W B Yeats, John Donne and the book of\u00a0Psalms to depict the stupidity of war and the virtues of friendship and cooperation. &#8216;No Man is an Island&#8217;\u00a0is an appropriate sentiment in this year when Britain&#8217;s relationship with continental Europe is being\u00a0reset to acknowledge the Referendum result.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marcio-da-silva.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3085\" alt=\"marcio da silva\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marcio-da-silva.jpg\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marcio-da-silva.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marcio-da-silva-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/marcio-da-silva-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Marcio da Silva&#8217;s new name for his orchestra, formerly known as\u00a0Ensemble OrQuesta, reflects his\u00a0growing commitment and enthusiasm for living and working in Hastings. He strives towards ever\u00a0improving standards in classical music. The orchestra is building a wonderful reputation among\u00a0&#8216;people in the know&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0This last year in Hastings, Marcio&#8217;s musicians produced \u00a0the Brahms\u00a0Requiem, Sibelius&#8217; Violin Concerto, Mozart&#8217;s Marriage of Figaro, Faure Requiem and more.\u00a0Lark Reviews has reported on most of these.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Marcio da Silva and his wife, Aysen Ulucan, who are both renowned soloist singers, also produced\u00a0recitals together. Aysen is a brilliant virtuoso violinist, who has played\u00a0in concerts\u00a0with Maxim Vengerov.\u00a0Next year&#8217;s &#8216;season&#8217; of classical music in Hastings produced by Marcio will cover 10 orchestral and\u00a0choral concerts, recitals and opera of the usual outstanding quality.
