The most unusual of these is <i>Disneyrama<\/i>, which uses five themes from Disney films (\u201cI was only allowed to use the first seven notes of each theme, for USA copyright reasons\u201d)! A highly eclectic CD.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BERNARDINO RIBERA (c1520-?1580) &#8211; MAGNIFICATS &amp; MOTETS<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> DE PROFUNDIS, director David Skinner<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION CDA 68141\u00a0\u00a0 76\u201951<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>All but one of the 19 tracks on this disc are first recordings. It is incredible that so much early music has still to be rediscovered and championed. The items here come from a choirbook in Toledo Cathedral. The book was heavily vandalised, probably in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century and so some detective and repair work has been necessary to bring this music back to life. A very worthy undertaking resulting in an enjoyable CD.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>TAVERNER \u2013 WESTERN WYNDE MASS \/ MISSA MATER CHRISTI SANCTISSIMA<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> CHOIR OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY, director, James O\u2019Donnell<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION CDA68147\u00a0 58\u201936<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Under the very capable direction of James O\u2019Donnell the Abbey choir present these well crafted renditions of these two Taverner mass settings, pairing the second, less familiar mass with the <i>Western Wynde<\/i>.\u00a0 Like the previous CD some reconstruction of a missing part has been undertaken with the music. Full texts and translations are included, together with the very helpful printing of the source melody of Western Wynde.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BEDRICH SMETANA \u2013 CZECH DANCES \/ ON THE SEASHORE<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> GARRICK OHLSSON, piano<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION CDA68062\u00a0 62\u201915<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Ohlsson presents a charming recording of this collection of short characteristic works for piano. An introduction to some unfamiliar and enjoyable music.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>AVE MARIA \u2013 MUSIC FOR UPPER VOICES<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ST CATHARINE\u2019S GIRLS\u2019 CHOIR, CAMBRIDGE, director Edward Wickham<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10170\u00a0 66\u201915<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This is a beautiful collection of mostly sacred contemporary works for upper voices. Mass settings by Leighton and Tavener sit alongside canticles from Diana Burrell and Joanna Marsh and settings of Ave Maria by Rebecca Clarke &amp; Cecilia McDowall. There are two works by Judith Bingham and <i>Three carols <\/i>by Stevie Wishart. There is much to be enjoyed here.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SERGEI RACHMANINOFF \u2013 VESPERS, Op 37<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ST THOMAS CHOIR of men &amp; boys, Fifth Avenue, New York, conductor John Scott.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10169\u00a0 58\u201916<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>John Scott\u2019s legacy continues with the release of this recording from his choir on Fifth Avenue. Rachmaninoff\u2019s Vespers comes from a time when Western ears were less accustomed to the traditions of the Orthodox church. This recording presents a very assured performance of the music of the Russian Orthodox all night vigil from this bastion of the Anglican choral tradition in the US! It is an excellent example of how the music of worship can cross cultural barriers and have universal appeal.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>J S BACH \u2013 CLAVIER-UBUNG III<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> STEPHEN FARR, Metzler organ of Trinity College, Cambridge<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10120\u00a0 (2 Discs) 58\u201926\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 46\u201954<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This is Stephen Farr\u2019s first JS Bach recording. He presents this music in carefully registered and executed performances on this organ that has already been used for a number of recordings of Bach. An entrancing presentation of what itself is a well crafted collection of organ works.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SIGNS, GAMES &amp; MESSAGES \u2013 WORKS FOR SOLO VIOLIN BY BARTOK &amp; KURTAG<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> SIMON SMITH, violin<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10167\u00a0 56\u201947<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>An unusual programme is presented on this recording by British violinist Simon Smith. The pairing of Kurtag\u2019s <i>Signs, Games &amp; Messages<\/i> from the 1980s with Bartok\u2019s <i>Sonata for Solo Violin<\/i> of 1944 makes for very interesting listening. The Bartok sonata was a commission from Yehudi Menhuin and it makes great demands on the player. Kurtag\u2019s work consists of a number of very short movements from a larger collection of short works for various solo instruments. All of this is music that inspires repeated listening. A genre that has much to be explored.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>MOZART \u2013 PIANO TRIOS KV 502, 542 &amp; 564<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RAUTIO PIANO TRIO<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10168\u00a0 57\u201911<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>More traditional fare is to be found on this disc. The Rautio piano trio breathe new life into this music\u00a0 in committed performances on period instruments.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>ELIZABETH\u2019S LUTES <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ALEX McCARTNEY<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> VETERUM MUSICA\u00a0 56\u201905<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Alex McCartney not only plays lutes but makes them! On this CD we have an enchanting collection of fine performances of lute repertoire from a number of composers from the time of the court of Elizabeth I. Very enjoyable.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>RAUTUVAARA \u2013 RUBAIYAT, BALADA, CANTO V, 4 SONGS FROM RASPUTIN<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> GERALD FINLEY &amp; MIKA POHJONEN soloists<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HELSINKI PHIL ORCH &amp; MUSIC CENTRE CHOIR, John Storgards, conductor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ONDINE\u00a0 ODE1274-2\u00a0\u00a0 59\u201929<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The recent death of the composer makes this release more poignant. Most of his work has been presented on CDs from Odine and here we have four contrasting works. Song cycles respectively for baritone and tenor with orchestra are to be found alongside <i>Into the heart of light (Canto V)<\/i>and the selection of songs from the opera Rasputin for mixed choir and orchestra.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>THE PLEASURES OF THE IMAGINATION \u2013 ENGLISH 18<sup>th<\/sup> CENTURY MUSIC FOR HARPSICHORD<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> SOPHIE YATES, harpsichord<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> CHACONNE CHANDOS CHAN 0814\u00a0\u00a0 75\u201920<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This lovely CD presents a varied selection of the English harpsichord repertoire. The longest section of the disc is given over to the seemingly recently rediscovered Richard Jones with his <i>Third set of lessons in B flat major<\/i>. Other composers are John Blow, Jeremiah Clarke, William Croft, Maurice Greene, Thomas Arne &amp; Johann Christian Bach. A lovely excursion into a magical soundworld.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>PRELUDIO \u2013 MUSIC FOR ORGAN BY CARSON COOMAN<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ERIK SIMMONS, organ of Basilica Maria-Himmelfahrt, Krzeszow, Poland<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> DIVINE ART\u00a0 DDA 21229\u00a0 (2 Discs) 68\u201939\u00a0\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 72\u201919<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This is a very welcome release, collecting a number of works for organ by this prolific American composer. Most of the works here have been inspired by aspects of Early music whilst combining them with more contemporary compositional techniques. A very interesting CD set.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">DVD \/ BLU-RAY\/ CD set<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>THE GRAND ORGAN OF GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> JONATHAN HOPE, Gloucester Cathedral organ<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> PRIORY PRDVD 14 (Blu-ray\/DVD\/CD \u2013 3 disc set)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The latest release in this line from Priory presents a varied and entertaining programme played by the cathedral\u2019s Assistant Organist. Each of the three discs presents the same basic programme and there are bonus features on the two visual discs. Included alongside traditional fare such as Bach\u2019s <i>Toccata &amp; Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 <\/i>&amp; Vaughan Williams\u2019 <i>Rhosymedre<\/i> are transcriptions of Liszt,\u00a0 Elgar and Cochereau as well as this organist\u2019s own transcription of Dukas\u2019 <i>The Sorceror\u2019s Apprentice<\/i>.<br \/>\nThe bonus features include an explanation and introduction to the programme and a very detailed organ tour as well as narrated demonstrations and an astonishing bonus piece by Leo Sowerby which includes extended writing for pedals, <i>Pageant<\/i>.
