As in previous volumes there is much variety and interest in the sequence of chants and all is presented with conviction and attention to detail. Each CD can be enjoyed in its own right but as a collection they are a wonderful resource for entertaining listening or private devotion as well as being a wonderful record of the current state of cathedral music.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SIR CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD \u2013 THE COMPLETE ORGAN WORKS 3<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> DANIEL COOK, organ of SALISBURY CATHEDRAL<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> PRIORY PRCD 1146 (71\u201914)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This volume continues the survey of Stanford\u2019s organ music with this excellent programme by Daniel Cook. Included are <i>Sonata No 4in C minor, Canzona, Three Preludes &amp; Fugues &amp; Six Preludes &amp; Postludes Set 2<\/i> as well as an arrangement of a short piece originally for piano &amp; violin.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>GREAT EUROPEAN ORGANS No. 99<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> DAVID LEIGH, organ of ST PATRICK\u2019S CATHEDRAL, DUBLIN<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> PRIORY PRCD 1168<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>GREAT EUROPEAN ORGANS No. 100<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> DAVID POULTER, organ of LIVERPOOL (ANGLICAN) CATHEDRAL<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> PRIORY PRCD 1158<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>With these two releases another long-running series from Priory comes to an end. The <i>GREAT EUROPEAN ORGANS<\/i> series has been a mammoth undertaking, showcasing the very best of organs and organists and an immensely diverse repertoire of familiar and unfamiliar music.<\/p>\n<p>The St Patrick\u2019s CD presents some wonderful music spanning the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and twentieth centuries. Larger works here include <i>Concert Fantasia in D minor <\/i>by Sir Robert Prescott Stewart and Lemare\u2019s <i>Organ Symphony No 1 in G minor<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The final CD, from Liverpool, presents a programme of mostly familiar music well suited to this grandest of organs and cathedrals. Beginning with Elgar\u2019s <i>Sonata in G<\/i> and ending with Walton\u2019s <i>Orb &amp; Sceptre<\/i> the programme also features further music by Walton, Bridge, Howells, Rawsthorne &amp; a transcription of Whitlock\u2019s brilliant Elgar-pastiche, <i>Dignity &amp; Impudence<\/i>. This series will be missed but it leaves behind a treasure trove of fine recordings which will hopefully continue to be available for many years to come.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>TALLIS \u2013 LAMENTATIONS<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> THE CARDINALL\u2019S MUSICK, directed by ANDREW CARWOOD<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION CDA68121 (73\u201909)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Two settings of <i>Lamentations of Jeremiah <\/i>form\u00a0 the core of this all-Tallis recording by The Cardinall\u2019s Musick. Alongside these can be found items from the Short \u2018Dorian\u2019 Service, psalms and a <i>Te Deum.<\/i> The Fitzalan Chapel of Arundel Castle seems a fitting place for singing and recording this music. The programme highlights the variety of composing styles employed, from the polyphony of the expansive choral settings to simpler homophonic forms.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>CONDUCTUS 3 \u2013 Music &amp; Poetry from 13<sup>th<\/sup> Century France<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> JOHN POTTER, CHRISTOPHER O\u2019GORMAN &amp; ROGERS COVEY-CRUMP<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION\u00a0 CDA68115\u00a0 (61\u201935)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The Conductus form sits alongside Organum and early motets but is less well explored by musicians today. This third compilation comes from experts in the field, recorded at the National Centre for Early Music in York. The performers breathe life into this ancient music, creating a compelling performance.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>HOWELLS \u2013 Collegium Regale<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> CHOIR OF TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, director STEPHEN LAYTON, organ ELEANOR KORNAS &amp; OWAIN PARK<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> HYPERION CDA68105 (61\u201914)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>A beautiful recording of a selection of Howells\u2019 church music-\u00a0 Holy Communion, morning and evening canticles, anthems and and a solo organ piece, the <i>Rhapsody No 1 in D flat major.<\/i> This music never fails to move me.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>SONGS OF LOVE, WAR &amp; MELANCHOLY \u2013 The operatic fantasias of JEAN-FRANCOIS GALLAY<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> ANNEKE SCOTT, natural horn, STEVEN DEVINE, piano, LUCY CROWE, soprano<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10153 (66\u201941)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This is the final volume of three by Anneke Scott of music by Jean-Francois Gallay, himself a natural horn player. There is great vitality in these performances of music which was all new to me.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>THE SOLDIER\u2019S RETURN \u2013 Guitar works inspired by Scotland<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> JAMES AKERS, romantic guitar<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10165 (61\u201900)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Resonus is to be congratulated on its ability to produce fine recordings of\u00a0 interesting and unusual repertoire. This CD features music inspired by Scotland from a number of guitarist\/composers, many of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century,\u00a0 from continental Europe. It is a beautiful CD.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>CONVERSED MONOLOGUE \u2013 Concerti by JG GRAUN, J-M LECLAIR &amp; WF BACH<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> FANTASTICUS XL<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10166 (70\u201908)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>An interesting assemblage of 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century instrumental music written for courtly patrons. Using authentic instruments this ensemble transport the listener to a different age and culture in committed performances of these three concerti.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>HER HEAVENLY HARMONY \u2013 Profane music from the royal court<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> THE QUEEN\u2019S SIX<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> RESONUS RES10164 (62\u201919)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Further courtly music, this time vocal music from the reign of Elizabeth I. This is the second album from this choir devoted to music by familiar names of the Tudor and Jacobean royal courts. Morley, Tomkins, Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons &amp; Weelkes are all represented by secular songs of love, death and other themes. A lovely collection.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BRITISH VIOLIN SONATAS VOL 2<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> TASMIN LITTLE, violin, PIERS LANE, piano<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> CHANDOS\u00a0 CHAN10899 (66\u201905)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Volume collects violin music by influential British composers who span the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\/20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. Sonatas by Bridge, Bliss &amp; Ireland sit alongside Vaughan Williams\u2019 <i>Two Pieces<\/i> and a very late piece by William Lloyd Webber, <i>The Gardens at Eastwell<\/i>. A fine programme.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>DOMENICO SCARLATTI \u2013 18 KEYBOARD SONATAS<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> YEVGENY SUBDIN, piano<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> BIS RECORDS BIS-2138 SACD (74\u201930)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This collection of keyboard sonatas is very enjoyable. Whilst opinions differ about the piano being a suitable vehicle for this repertoire it is without doubt that Yevgeny Subdin\u2019s expressive playing brings life and feeling to this music.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>J S BACH \u2013 SECULAR CANTATAS Vol 6 (TRAUERODE)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> BACH COLLEGIUM JAPAN chorus &amp; orchestra, MASAAKI SUZUKI, director<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> BIS RECORDS BIS-2181 SACD (78\u201955)<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This volume presents performances of the Trauerode, <i>Lass, Furstin, Lass noch einen Strahl,<\/i>Schlage doch, Gewunschte Stunde (a work thought now to be possibly composed by Georg M Hoffmann) and <i>Tilge, Hochster, meine Sunden <\/i>(after Pergolesi\u2019s Stabat Mater).
