It has been a rough time for the Company over the last year but things really do seem to have turned a corner, even if there are still a significant number of problems &#8211; not least the on-going financial concerns which have led to a change of focus. This however should be all for the good as it is spreading the work of the Company outside of central London and aiming to bring in ever wider audiences while clearly focused on classical opera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Daniel-Kramer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2955\" alt=\"Daniel Kramer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Daniel-Kramer.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Daniel Kramer spoke with real enthusiasm of his new post which he takes up on 1 August and the skills he will bring to the Company &#8211; skills already in evidence from his easy capacity to enthuse his audience and to praise the quality of those working with him.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a particular focus this year on the work of Jonathan Miller&#8217;s whose iconic production of\u00a0<em>Rigoletto<\/em> will return to the Coliseum in addition to his\u00a0<em>Mikado.\u00a0<\/em>Let us hope that this leads to a revival of his fine\u00a0<em>La boheme<\/em> given the poor reception of the most recent version.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ENO-Rigoletto.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2972\" alt=\"ENO Rigoletto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/ENO-Rigoletto.jpg\" width=\"276\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Season highlights include:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ENO\u2019s Composer-in-Residence, Ryan Wigglesworth, conducts the World Premiere of his first opera\u00a0<em>The Winter\u2019s Tale<\/em>, with actor Rory Kinnear making his directorial debut<\/li>\n<li>The European Premiere of\u00a0<em>Charlie Parker\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0<em>YARDBIRD<\/em>, a jazz-infused chamber opera by Daniel Schnyder that tells the story of the great bebop pioneer, starring Lawrence Brownlee in the title role. Ron Daniels directs\u00a0<em>YARDBIRD\u00a0<\/em>at Hackney Empire \u2013 the first opera to be performed as part of a long-term collaboration with Hackney Empire and Opera Philadelphia<\/li>\n<li>World-renowned artist and director William Kentridge directs a new production of Berg\u2019s\u00a0<em>Lulu<\/em>, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth<\/li>\n<li>Olivier Award-winning director Richard Jones returns to ENO to direct a new production of\u00a0<em>Don Giovanni,\u00a0<\/em>conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, with Christopher Purves in the title role<\/li>\n<li>ENO takes Jonathan Miller\u2019s popular production of Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Mikado\u00a0<\/em>to the Opera House at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool<\/li>\n<li>A new partnership with the Southbank Centre.
