{"id":2958,"date":"2016-04-30T11:19:38","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T10:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=2958"},"modified":"2016-04-30T11:20:55","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T10:20:55","slug":"opera-south-east-verdi-macbeth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=2958","title":{"rendered":"Opera South East: Verdi Macbeth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>White Rock Theatre Hastings;\u00a0Friday 22<sup>nd<\/sup> April 2016<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/OSE-Macbeth.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2961\" alt=\"OSE Macbeth\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/OSE-Macbeth.jpg\" width=\"426\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/OSE-Macbeth.jpg 426w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/OSE-Macbeth-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the combination of celebrations for the anniversary of Shakespeare\u2019s death and Verdi\u2019s splendid music <i>Macbeth<\/i> was\u00a0 the ideal choice for the 2016\u00a0 production, with Fraser Grant exploring the dark, politically intriguing, world of the play.<\/p>\n<p>The soloist\u2019s diction was first class and of course being sung in English helped the audience, but there were times when I found it extremely hard to follow the ensemble lyrics, although the harmonies and strength were thrilling.\u00a0 Returning to Opera South East, international soprano, Mari Wyn Williams, played the exacting role of Lady Macbeth superbly, opposite regular OSE baritone Peter Grevett as a deadly Macbeth.\u00a0 Rich bass Richard Woodall gave a strong performance as Banquo, managing an enormously long cloak with precision.\u00a0 He doubled as the white-coated doctor who wielded an enormous hypodermic needle. Benjie del Rosario, tenor, performed an admirable Macduff with soprano Talitha McIntyre-Burnie giving her first performance with OSE as the Lady-in-Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening of act one, the coven of pregnant witches foretell the prophecy and the writing is on the wall \u2013 quite literally \u2013 the three paint white text onto the photographic paper backdrop in Gaelic!\u00a0 Fortunately for us there was a glossary for easy translation and for the finale the whole thing was pulled to a pile and revealed a back-drop in blue with a white cross marked <i>SAOR ALBA<\/i> \u2013 Scotland is Free. Brilliant.
