Described by The Times as \u2018one of the most deeply thoughtful and ravishingly beautiful re-creations of Puccini\u2019s opera that you\u2019re ever likely to see\u2019 Anthony Minghella\u2019s stunning production of\u00a0Madam Butterfly<\/em>\u00a0returns to ENO for its sixth revival.<\/p>\n

This is the first and only opera directed by the late Anthony Minghella and his wife Carolyn Choa, who assisted him as choreographer and associate director. Best known for his work in film, Minghella won an Oscar for his film\u00a0The English Patient\u00a0<\/em>and a BAFTA for\u00a0The Talented Mr Ripley.<\/em><\/p>\n

Madam Butterfly<\/em>\u00a0is one of opera\u2019s most enduring tales of unrequited love. With its breathtaking mix of cinematic images, traditional Japanese theatre, colourful costumes and stunning sets, Anthony Minghella\u2019s Oliver Award-winning production has been hailed as\u2019 The most beautiful show of the year\u2019 (Sunday Telegraph<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The original creative team consists of set designer Michael Levine, award-winning lighting designer Peter Mumford and fashion designer Han Feng, whose costumes for the opera launched Feng\u2019s career in costume design.<\/p>\n

Acclaimed British conductor Sir Richard Armstrong conducts his first Puccini opera for ENO. Formerly Music Director of Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera, his recent appearances at the London Coliseum include five star productions of both\u00a0The Passenger\u00a0<\/em>(2011) and\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Makropulos Case\u00a0<\/em>(2010) and the revival of Calixto Bieito\u2019s Carmen (2015).<\/p>\n

Soprano Rena Harms returns to ENO to make her role debut as Cio-Cio San. She previously performed the role of Amelia in Dmitri Tcherniakov\u2019s production of\u00a0Simon Boccanegra<\/em>\u00a0for the Company in 2011.<\/p>\n

British tenor David Butt Philip makes his role debut as F.B. Pinkerton. He was last seen at ENO as Rodolfo in Jonathan Miller\u2019s production of\u00a0La boh\u00e8me<\/em>\u00a0in 2014, with\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0commenting on his performance that he was \u2018a Rodolfo to treasure\u2019.<\/p>\n

ENO Harewood Artists Matthew Durkan and Samantha Price make their debuts in the roles of Prince Yamadori and Kate Pinkerton respectively.<\/p>\n
