Garsington Opera\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> 2016 season, from 3 June to 17 July, will present Tchaikovsky\u2019s powerful\u00a0Eugene Onegin<\/i>, Mozart\u2019s great\u00a0opera seria<\/i>\u00a0Idomeneo<\/i>, Rossini\u2019s sparkling\u00a0L\u2019italiana in Algeri<\/i>, and an innovative collaboration with Rambert, one of Britain\u2019s leading dance companies, with a unique realisation of Haydn\u2019s\u00a0The Creation\u00a0<\/i>combining music and dance.<\/i><\/p>\n

Garsington Opera welcomes celebrated British artists of international distinction.\u00a0Toby Spence<\/b>\u00a0(tenor) and\u00a0Roderick Williams<\/b>\u00a0(baritone) make both title role and festival debuts, the former in\u00a0Idomeneo<\/i>\u00a0and the latterEugene Onegin<\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0Michael Boyd\u00a0<\/b>(director),\u00a0<\/b>former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company andTom Piper\u00a0<\/b>(designer), praised for his commemorative poppy installation,\u00a0Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red<\/i>at the Tower of London, produce\u00a0Eugene Onegin<\/i>, conducted by\u00a0Douglas Boyd<\/b>\u00a0(Garsington Opera\u2019s Artistic Director).\u00a0\u00a0Tim Albery<\/b>\u00a0(director) and\u00a0Hannah Clark<\/b>\u00a0(designer), whose recent designs for\u00a0Queen Anne<\/i>\u00a0at the RSC were critically acclaimed, produce\u00a0Idomeneo\u00a0<\/i>with leading Swedish conductor\u00a0Tobias Ringborg<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Will Tuckett<\/b>\u00a0(director), director of The Royal Ballet\u2019s acclaimed production of\u00a0Elizabeth<\/i>, and\u00a0George Souglides<\/b>(designer) combine with\u00a0<\/b>distinguished Rossini expert\u00a0David Parry\u00a0<\/b>(conductor)\u00a0<\/b>for a new production of\u00a0L\u2019italiana in Algeri<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Garsington Opera continues its policy of seeking out the very best singers from around the world and showcasing rising stars from Britain.\u00a0 The distinguished Garsington Opera Orchestra, many of whom have been with the company for over 20 years, will be joined by the Garsington Opera Chorus, comprising emerging talent from the UK and beyond.<\/p>\n

EUGENE ONEGIN<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Based on Russian poet and author Alexander Pushkin\u2019s novella, Tchaikovsky\u2019s powerful and moving opera about youth and first love features British baritone\u00a0Roderick Williams<\/b>\u00a0making his debut in the title role and Welsh soprano\u00a0Natalya Romaniw<\/b>\u00a0making her role debut as the young heroine Tatyana.\u00a0 Lithuanian mezzo-soprano\u00a0Jurgita Adamonyt?\u00a0<\/b>sings Olga and Cardiff Singer of the World 2015 finalist Ukrainian tenor\u00a0Oleksiy Palchykov\u00a0<\/b>sings Lensky.\u00a0 The role of Prince Gremin is sung by international bass\u00a0Brindley Sherratt<\/b>.\u00a0 They are joined by\u00a0Louise Winter<\/b>\u00a0(Larina),\u00a0Kathleen Wilkinson<\/b>(Filippyevna) and\u00a0Mark Wilde<\/b>\u00a0(Triquet).\u00a0\u00a0Douglas Boyd<\/b>\u00a0conducts with\u00a0Michael Boyd,<\/b>\u00a0a fluent Russian speaker, directing and\u00a0Tom Piper<\/b>\u00a0designing.<\/p>\n

IDOMENEO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

War hero Idomeneo, to be sung by international opera star\u00a0Toby Spence<\/b>\u00a0making his debut in the title role, promises the gods he will sacrifice the first person he sees in return for a safe passage. That person is his son Idamante, to be sung by Australian mezzo-soprano\u00a0Caitlin Hulcup<\/b>.\u00a0 Added to the anguished love triangle between his son, the Trojan princess Ilia, performed by rising star\u00a0Louise Alder<\/b>, and Greek princess Elettra sung by\u00a0Rebecca von Lipinski<\/b>, a terrible struggle ensues between fatherly devotion, staying true to a promise and young love.\u00a0\u00a0Timothy Robinson<\/b>\u00a0(Arbace),\u00a0Robert Murray<\/b>(High Priest) and\u00a0Nicholas Masters<\/b>\u00a0(Neptune) complete the cast.\u00a0 Swedish\u00a0Tobias Ringborg\u00a0<\/b>conducts with distinguished international opera director\u00a0Tim Albery<\/b>\u00a0directing with designs by\u00a0Hannah Clark.<\/b><\/p>\n

L\u2019ITALIANA IN ALGERI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Written at the height of Rossini\u2019s inventive powers, madness, hilarity and a sense of the surreal permeate the opera with the courageous heroine Isabella at the centre of a maelstrom of confusion, suffused throughout with humour and tenderness.Ezgi Kutlu<\/b>\u00a0sings the young Isabella searching for her beloved Lindoro sung by the Brazilian tenor\u00a0Luciano Botelho<\/b>.\u00a0 The blustering Mustaf\u00e0 is performed by\u00a0Quirijn de Lang\u00a0<\/b>and his long-suffering wife Elvira by rising star\u00a0Mary Bevan<\/b>.\u00a0 They are joined by\u00a0Geoffrey Dolton<\/b>\u00a0(Taddeo),\u00a0Katie Bray<\/b>\u00a0(Zulma) and\u00a0Bo\u017eidar Smiljani?<\/b>\u00a0(Haly).\u00a0 Conductor\u00a0David Parry<\/b>\u00a0returns to conduct his thirteenth Rossini opera for Garsington with Olivier award-winner\u00a0Will Tuckett<\/b>\u00a0directing and\u00a0George Souglides<\/b>\u00a0designing.<\/p>\n

THE CREATION<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Conductor\u00a0Douglas Boyd<\/b>, Garsington Opera\u2019s Artistic Director, collaborates with\u00a0Mark Baldwin<\/b>, Choreographer and Artistic Director of Rambert, to bring an inspiring realisation of\u00a0\u00a0The Creation<\/i>\u00a0through music and dance.\u00a0 40 dancers from Rambert and the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance will be joined on stage by Garsington Opera\u2019s orchestra and chorus with soloists\u00a0Sarah Tynan<\/b>\u00a0(soprano),\u00a0James Gilchrist<\/b>\u00a0(tenor) and\u00a0Neal Davies<\/b>\u00a0(bass).\u00a0 Designs by renowned visual artist\u00a0Pablo Bronstein<\/b>, whose site specific work for the Duveen Galleries at Tate Britain opens in April, will add a spectacular visual dimension to Haydn\u2019s music.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
