{"id":2766,"date":"2016-02-01T16:22:53","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T16:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=2766"},"modified":"2016-02-01T16:23:29","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T16:23:29","slug":"eminent-british-stars-come-to-garsington-opera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=2766","title":{"rendered":"EMINENT BRITISH STARS COME TO GARSINGTON OPERA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Garsington Opera\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> 2016 season, from 3 June to 17 July, will present Tchaikovsky\u2019s powerful\u00a0<i>Eugene Onegin<\/i>, Mozart\u2019s great\u00a0<i>opera seria<\/i>\u00a0<i>Idomeneo<\/i>, Rossini\u2019s sparkling\u00a0<i>L\u2019italiana in Algeri<\/i>, and an innovative collaboration with Rambert, one of Britain\u2019s leading dance companies, with a unique realisation of Haydn\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Creation\u00a0<\/i>combining music and dance<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Garsington Opera welcomes celebrated British artists of international distinction.\u00a0<b>Toby Spence<\/b>\u00a0(tenor) and\u00a0<b>Roderick Williams<\/b>\u00a0(baritone) make both title role and festival debuts, the former in\u00a0<i>Idomeneo<\/i>\u00a0and the latter<i>Eugene Onegin<\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0<b>Michael Boyd\u00a0<\/b>(director),<b>\u00a0<\/b>former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company and<b>Tom Piper\u00a0<\/b>(designer), praised for his commemorative poppy installation,\u00a0<i>Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red<\/i>at the Tower of London, produce\u00a0<i>Eugene Onegin<\/i>, conducted by\u00a0<b>Douglas Boyd<\/b>\u00a0(Garsington Opera\u2019s Artistic Director).\u00a0\u00a0<b>Tim Albery<\/b>\u00a0(director) and\u00a0<b>Hannah Clark<\/b>\u00a0(designer), whose recent designs for\u00a0<i>Queen Anne<\/i>\u00a0at the RSC were critically acclaimed, produce\u00a0<i>Idomeneo\u00a0<\/i>with leading Swedish conductor\u00a0<b>Tobias Ringborg<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<b>Will Tuckett<\/b>\u00a0(director), director of The Royal Ballet\u2019s acclaimed production of\u00a0<i>Elizabeth<\/i>, and\u00a0<b>George Souglides<\/b>(designer) combine with<b>\u00a0<\/b>distinguished Rossini expert\u00a0<b>David Parry\u00a0<\/b>(conductor)<b>\u00a0<\/b>for a new production of\u00a0<i>L\u2019italiana in Algeri<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Garsington Opera continues its policy of seeking out the very best singers from around the world and showcasing rising stars from Britain.\u00a0 The distinguished Garsington Opera Orchestra, many of whom have been with the company for over 20 years, will be joined by the Garsington Opera Chorus, comprising emerging talent from the UK and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">EUGENE ONEGIN<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on Russian poet and author Alexander Pushkin\u2019s novella, Tchaikovsky\u2019s powerful and moving opera about youth and first love features British baritone\u00a0<b>Roderick Williams<\/b>\u00a0making his debut in the title role and Welsh soprano\u00a0<b>Natalya Romaniw<\/b>\u00a0making her role debut as the young heroine Tatyana.\u00a0 Lithuanian mezzo-soprano\u00a0<b>Jurgita Adamonyt?\u00a0<\/b>sings Olga and Cardiff Singer of the World 2015 finalist Ukrainian tenor\u00a0<b>Oleksiy Palchykov\u00a0<\/b>sings Lensky.\u00a0 The role of Prince Gremin is sung by international bass\u00a0<b>Brindley Sherratt<\/b>.\u00a0 They are joined by\u00a0<b>Louise Winter<\/b>\u00a0(Larina),\u00a0<b>Kathleen Wilkinson<\/b>(Filippyevna) and\u00a0<b>Mark Wilde<\/b>\u00a0(Triquet).\u00a0\u00a0<b>Douglas Boyd<\/b>\u00a0conducts with\u00a0<b>Michael Boyd,<\/b>\u00a0a fluent Russian speaker, directing and\u00a0<b>Tom Piper<\/b>\u00a0designing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>IDOMENEO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>War hero Idomeneo, to be sung by international opera star\u00a0<b>Toby Spence<\/b>\u00a0making his debut in the title role, promises the gods he will sacrifice the first person he sees in return for a safe passage.
