First seen in D\u00fcsseldorf in 2008, Tcherniakov&#8217;s bold and contemporary production goes to the core of Shostakovich&#8217;s powerful drama. Mark Wigglesworth conducts his first production as ENO Music Director.<\/p>\n<p>Shostakovich&#8217;s operatic masterpiece of the Soviet era,\u00a0<em>Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of a bored and lonely merchant&#8217;s wife, who seeks solace and excitement in an affair that ultimately leads to her downfall. Its graphic language and explicit portrayal of sex and violence led to the work being banned in the Soviet Union for almost 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Opera and theatre director Dmitri Tcherniakov has a global reputation for his daring\u00a0and often contentious directorial style. For ENO he has directed\u00a0<em>Simon Boccanegra<\/em>\u00a0in 2011.\u00a0<em>The Independent<\/em>\u00a0noted \u201cthere is an extraordinary director at work here\u201d. He has also created the design of this production.<\/p>\n<p>ENO\u2019s new Music Director Mark Wigglesworth is an acclaimed Shostakovich interpreter, having recorded all of the composer\u2019s symphonies to critical acclaim,\u00a0<em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em>\u00a0named him as \u201cthe finest Shostakovich interpreter of his generation\u201d. He conducted a previous production of\u00a0<em>Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk<\/em>\u00a0for the Company in 2001. For ENO Mark has also conducted\u00a0<em>Cos\u00ec fan tutte, Falstaff, Katya Kabanova\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Parsifal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Leading a world class cast is soprano Patricia Racette making her debut as Katerina (the title role).\u00a0British tenor John Daszak made his professional opera debut with ENO in\u00a0<em>Jen?fa\u00a0<\/em>and has since appeared in a number of productions including\u00a0<em>Boris Godunov<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Manon Lescaut<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Nabucco<\/em>,\u00a0<em>A Masked Ball<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Trojans<\/em>. He will perform the role of Sergei.\u00a0Bass baritone Robert Hayward will play Boris, Katerina\u2019s father-in-law. Robert has performed in numerous productions for ENO including\u00a0<em>Otello<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Pelleas and Melisande<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Lulu<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Ring Cycle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Bradford-born tenor Peter Hoare will sing the role of Zinovy Ismailov. Peter last performed at English National Opera in the role of Hermann in David Alden\u2019s new production of\u00a0<em>The Queen of Spades.\u00a0<\/em>British bass Matthew Best was last seen at ENO as Tiresias in the world premiere of Julian Anderson\u2019s\u00a0<em>Thebans<\/em>\u00a0and as Swallow in David Alden\u2019s critically acclaimed production of\u00a0<em>Peter Grimes<\/em>.\u00a0 He will sing the role of the Old Convict.\u00a0Danish bass Per Bach Nissen makes his ENO debut as the Chief of Police.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk\u00a0<\/em>opens at the London Coliseum on 26 September 2015 for 8 performances \u2013 26, 29 September, 2, 8, 10, 13, 20 October at 7.30pm, 17 October at 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>It will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 on Tuesday 13 October at 7.00pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New ENO Music Director Mark Wigglesworth conducts Dmitri Tcherniakov&#8217;s new production of\u00a0Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk \u00a0 Award-winning Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov returns to ENO with a new production of Shostakovich&#8217;s\u00a0Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.
