Set during the dying days of Franco\u2019s Spain, Calixto Bieito\u2019s \u201ccogent, gripping\u201d (<em>The Guardian<\/em>) production of\u00a0<em>Carmen\u00a0<\/em>returns to the London Coliseum for its first revival.<\/p>\n<p>Calixto Bieito remains one of the most sought after opera and theatre directors of his generation and is particularly well known for his radical reinterpretations of classic operas and plays. He has previously directed ENO productions of\u00a0<em>Don Giovanni\u00a0<\/em>(2001)<em>\u00a0A Masked Ball<\/em>\u00a0(2002), and\u00a0<em>Fidelio<\/em>\u00a0(2013). Bieito will return to the London Coliseum in November 2015 to direct a new production of Verdi\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Force of Destiny<\/em>, conducted by incoming ENO Music Director Mark Wigglesworth.\u00a0<em>The Force of Destiny\u00a0<\/em>is a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and will be performed in their 2017\/18 season, marking Bieito\u2019s directorial debut with the House.<\/p>\n<p>Sensational mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House from 2011-13. She made her ENO debut as an \u201cexceptionally fine\u201d Maddalena (<em>The Independent<\/em>) in Christopher Alden\u2019s production of<em>Rigoletto\u00a0<\/em>(February 2014), and also performed the role at the Royal Opera House later in the year. Accompanied by pianist Iain Burnside she performed a series of Rachmaninoff songs at the Wigmore Hall last season, which were also recorded for the Delphian label.<\/p>\n<p>Internationally acclaimed tenor Eric Cutler will made his ENO debut in the role of Don Jos\u00e9. He has performed in many of the world\u2019s leading opera houses, including Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; La Monnaie, Brussels; Opera Australia and the Metropolitan Opera, New York. In 2012 he performed the role of Nadir in Bizet\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Pearl Fishers<\/em>\u00a0with Santa Fe Opera, for which the\u00a0<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>praised his \u201cfocused, ringing tenor and blazing high notes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>ENO Harewood Artist Rhian Lois returns as Frasquita. She has frequently performed with ENO and has, this season, \u2018sparkled\u2019 (<em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>) as Atalanta in Nicholas Hytner\u2019s production of\u00a0<em>Xerxes<\/em>\u00a0and also created the role of the Younger Woman in the world premiere of\u00a0<em>Between Worlds<\/em>, the debut opera from composer Tansy Davies and librettist Nick Drake,\u00a0<em>Between Worlds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Opera Works singer Clare Presland will play M\u00e9rc\u00e8des. She made her 2012 ENO debut as the Palestinian Woman in John Adams\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Death of Klinghoffer\u00a0<\/em>and has since appeared in numerous productions with the Company, including\u00a0<em>Between Worlds<\/em>(alongside Rhian Lois) and as Wowkle in Richard Jones\u2019s Olivier Award-winning\u00a0<em>The Girl of the Golden West.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>ENO Harewood Artist Eleanor Dennis sings her first Mica\u00ebla, Jos\u00e9\u2019s ever-loyal ex-girlfriend. She most recently appeared at the London Coliseum as First Lady in Simon McBurney\u2019s audience hit\u00a0<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>. Company favourite Leigh Melrose will play the toreador Escamillo. He performed an \u2018outstanding\u2019 (<em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>) Sonora in Richard Jones\u2019s production of\u00a0<em>The Girl of the Golden West<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the London Coliseum to conduct this production is British conductor Sir Richard Armstrong. Formerly Music Director of Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera, his recent appearances at the London Coliseum include five star productions of both\u00a0<em>The Passenger\u00a0<\/em>(2011) and\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Makropulos Case\u00a0<\/em>(2010).
