{"id":1882,"date":"2014-08-11T10:18:59","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T09:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=1882"},"modified":"2014-08-11T10:18:59","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T09:18:59","slug":"stephen-page-3-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=1882","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Page: 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-492 alignright\" alt=\"s page for web\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web-300x294.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web-1024x1006.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web-305x300.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/s-page-for-web.jpg 1330w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hastings Unitarian Church, Saturday 9<sup>th<\/sup> August 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It could have been embarrassing to almost run out of chairs and programmes, but in fact on a day when we expected competition from other attractions like Rural Past Times, it was wonderful to see the Meeting Place full to capacity.\u00a0 This was the third in our summer series of organ recitals, and we were delighted to see many new faces in the audience, as well as welcoming back many regular supporters.<\/p>\n<p>As always, Stephen treated us to an eclectic mix of items, from the known and loved \u2013 a Bach <i>Prelude and Fugue<\/i>, a Brahms <i>Chorale<\/i> and Rodgers\u2019 <i>Carousel Waltz<\/i> \u2013 to unknown compositions such as a lively sixteenth century Scottish dance with the beguiling title <i>Kinloch his (lang) pavane<\/i>!\u00a0 Handel featured in both categories, with his popular <i>Largo <\/i>and a lesser known combination of <i>Overture, Entr\u00e9e and Gavotte <\/i>from his Aylesford Pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s love of the Snetzler organ is infectious, and he always takes pride in demonstrating its potential. Eric Thiman\u2019s <i>Trumpet Tune and Air <\/i>allowed us to hear the <i>Hautbois<\/i> stop masquerading as a trumpet, while Percy Whitlock\u2019s reflective <i>Lantana <\/i>gave the delicate <i>Dulciana<\/i> stop its voice.\u00a0 Comer\u2019s <i>Hors d\u2019oeuvres <\/i>saw the Snetzler transformed to a theatre organ, set our toes tapping, and demonstrated considerable dexterity and the technique of thumbing down! CPE Bach\u2019s <i>Sonata in G minor <\/i>was the recital\u2019s longest work, allowing us to appreciate much of the organ\u2019s versatility within the one piece.<\/p>\n<p>The balanced and varied programme was held together by a lively, informative and often amusing commentary which added to the audience\u2019s enjoyment. A pleasing moment of intimacy was Stephen\u2019s tribute to two organists of considerable seniority in the audience to whom he owed his early inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>The last concert in this year\u2019s series will be on Saturday 11<sup>th<\/sup> October at 2.30pm.
