Opening with a conversation, hosted by James Naughtie with Oxford historian Professor Margaret MacMillan, writer Miranda Carter and Jeremy Paxman, it will be followed by a performance of\u00a0<i>Fidelio.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>World famous cellist\u00a0<b>Steven Isserlis<\/b>\u00a0gives a recital of cello sonatas by Beethoven and\u00a0 Frank Bridge (written in 1916) that will be interspersed by readings of war poetry, read by\u00a0<b>Samuel West,\u00a0<\/b>including\u00a0<b>r<\/b>ecently discovered unpublished poems by Siegfried Sassoon ( including one addressed to Beethoven).\u00a0 Renowned singer\u00a0<b>Ann Murray<\/b>\u00a0gives a masterclass with young Garsington Opera singers and the weekend also features tours of the Getty Library and a special cricket match with England Women\u2019s X1 vs an international celebrity team.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend\u2019s highlight is the first ever symphony concert in the Opera Pavilion and will feature Beethoven\u2019s incidental music to Goethe\u2019s tragedy\u00a0<i>Egmont\u00a0<\/i>and Schoenberg\u2019s\u00a0 visceral\u00a0<i>A Survivor from Warsaw<\/i>.\u00a0 Both works will be narrated by Samuel West.\u00a0 The evening culminates with Beethoven\u2019s\u00a0<i>Symphony no 9 in D minor<\/i>.\u00a0 Douglas Boyd conducts the Garsington Opera Orchestra and Chorus with Natalya Romaniw, Victoria Simmonds, Paul Nilon and Matthew Rose as soloists..<\/p>\n<p>Douglas Boyd, Artistic Director of Garsington Opera\u00a0 said:\u00a0\u00a0<i>Beethoven has the power to express every emotion of the human spirit.
