{"id":1315,"date":"2013-10-20T09:50:28","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T08:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=1315"},"modified":"2013-10-29T08:44:22","modified_gmt":"2013-10-29T08:44:22","slug":"stephen-page-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=1315","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/SAM_0182.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1318 alignright\" alt=\"SAM_0182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/SAM_0182-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hastings Unitarian Church, 19 October 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The final concert in the series, and the last event for this year\u2019s Hastings Week, brought a heady mix of musical styles and periods, opening with Francis Jackson\u2019s <i>The Archbishop\u2019s Fanfare. <\/i>The Snetzler has always responded well to early music and William Russell\u2019s Voluntary VIII sits snugly with an early baroque sound and gentle phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>Quite what the Lord Mayor got up to in <i>swan-hopping<\/i> is anyone\u2019s guess but the anonymous dance was delightful, as was the following <i>Southwark Grenadiers\u2019 March<\/i> before the popular <i>Prince of Denmark\u2019s March.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The central works took a more serious turn with Bach\u2019s <i>Herzlich tut mich verlangen<\/i> and Mozart\u2019s Fantasia in F. The latter was written for a mechanical clock, possibly for a memorial piece, and has the stature of a substantial work rather than the lollipops often associated with mechanical instruments. The arrangement worked extremely well and allowed Stephen to demonstrate his fleet articulation.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the medieval period we then heard <i>Estampie<\/i> from the Robertsbridge Codex and a <i>Canonnade <\/i>by Balbastre. The warlike tones seemed a little toy-soldierish on this occasion but none the less enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Percy Whitlock\u2019s <i>Chanty<\/i> formed a bridge to the final items which were all lighter and directed towards the theme for Hastings Week. <i>Syncopated Clocks<\/i> gave way to a joyous jazz arrangement of <i>Here, There &amp; Everywhere, <\/i>before we were all able to join in with <i>Paddington Bear<\/i> and <i>The Teddy Bears\u2019 Picnic. <\/i>\u00a0BH<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Page\u2019s next concert will be at Blacklands Church on 30 November at 2.00pm<b><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hastings Unitarian Church, 19 October 2013 The final concert in the series, and the last event for this year\u2019s Hastings Week, brought a heady mix of musical styles and periods, opening with Francis Jackson\u2019s The Archbishop\u2019s Fanfare.
