{"id":1281,"date":"2013-10-06T09:25:06","date_gmt":"2013-10-06T08:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.larkreviews.co.uk\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2013-10-06T09:25:06","modified_gmt":"2013-10-06T08:25:06","slug":"bexhill-choral-society-mozart-schubert-j-c-bach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/?p=1281","title":{"rendered":"Bexhill Choral Society: Mozart, Schubert &#038; J C Bach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/St-Augustine-11-6-13-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1282 alignright\" alt=\"St Augustine 11 6 13 (4)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.larkreviews.wickedlemon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/St-Augustine-11-6-13-4-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">St Augustine\u2019s, Bexhill, 5 October 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mozart\u2019s unfinished C minor Mass is not long enough for an evening by itself and on this occasion was sensibly supported by shorter liturgical works by near contemporaries.<\/p>\n<p>The opening <i>Kyrie<\/i> of the C minor brought us solid choral sound and more than sufficient orchestral accompaniment, and there was a good sense of attack in the <i>Gloria.<\/i> Claire Williamson had no difficulty with the coloratura of <i>Laudamus te<\/i> and her duet with Sophie Pullen for <i>Domine Deus<\/i> was pleasing. Sophie Pullen herself floated the heady lines of <i>Et incarnatus est <\/i>with ease. If the chorus suffered with occasional poor entries they managed to pull things together for the <i>Sanctus <\/i>and concluded the work with aplomb, thanks to the strengthening of the solo quartet.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth Roberts\u2019 approach to the Mass was brisk and business-like but he was more lyrical for Schubert\u2019s <i>Magnificat <\/i>D486, which allowed all the soloists to blossom before a finely honed <i>Gloria patri.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Amidst the sacred works came two interlopers. The strings of the Sussex Concert Orchestra gave us a workmanlike rendition of Mozart\u2019s <i>Eine kleine Nachtmusik, <\/i>and Peter Grevatt sang the count\u2019s aria from Act 3 of <i>Le Nozze di Figaro. <\/i>Though splendidly done it did seem a little out of place.<\/p>\n<p>The evening concluded with J C Bach\u2019s Magnificat in C. The bassoons left at this point which was a pity given the fine solo they had provided during Mozart\u2019s <i>Et incarnates est<\/i> but Andy Gill\u2019s solo trumpet more than compensated. The work looks back rather than forward and is easier on the chorus than the earlier works.
