<\/a><\/p>\nFriday 9th August, St Thomas of Canterbury Church, St Leonards on Sea<\/span><\/p>\n Even though I knew she had a lovely voice, having heard Anya Williams sing with her church choir, I was totally unprepared for the beauty of the voices we heard \u00a0at St Thomas of Canterbury Church. \u00a0Anya and Lucy Ashton sang together as\u00a0Melodia<\/i>\u00a0to raise funds for St Michael’s Hospice. \u00a0The evening, entitled\u00a0Women of Opera, included<\/i>\u00a0duets and solos from ten different operas, ably accompanied at the piano by Richard Eldridge.<\/p>\n These young singers, both still training, sang with such confidence that there was never any doubt about difficult passages or hitting high notes. \u00a0The audience was merely overwhelmed with delight.<\/p>\n Anya’s\u00a0Angels ever bright and fair<\/i>\u00a0from Handel’s\u00a0Theodora<\/i>, was indeed angelic, both in voice and presence.<\/p>\n One becomes perhaps over familiar with perfected recordings such as Delibes’ duet from\u00a0Lakme<\/i>\u00a0and hearing other less experienced renditions can be discomforting, but not on this occasion. \u00a0Melodia blended their voices with finesse and produced a smooth haunting sound.<\/p>\n I look forward to hearing them again and recommend that the careers of Anya Williams and Lucy Ashton be followed with keen expectation.
